As a Noob I have one suggestion so far: A tutorial mission reset method.

I am in the middle of Balancing the Books #4. I missed the data pop...lost it in the background. Now I am stuck. The box does not reset, and I keep getting told I don't need any more tools (?). I can't re-crack the box, and I can't go forward. Appear to be f#####d.

Another suggestion is to make the data pop targetable on the object listing.

Any suggestions?

Arrgh I am having the same problem! You can put in a petition and they will reset it and you can try again. Hopefully more than onceOops

Where can I post suggestions to the developers that would get read?

I'm in my first few days of playing and my biggest problem is reading the text! My eyes aren't so good and I can't afford a 42 inch monitor. So, I was wondering if it might be possible to give us an option in the setup screen for adjusting the fonts for any and or all text with font sizes greater than 13.

At the higher resolutions, the text is barely more than indecipherable dots on my screen. And that's at 1080p on a 32 inch TV as a monitor. As it is, I have to run in window mode and dump my desktop resolution down to the minimum that the EVE engine will run in just so I can read things. But that closes down my viewing space so much that I can barely see what's going on in the environment.

For instance. I was trying to read the tutorial the other day while I was searching for an anomaly or something and had my ship shot out from underneath me! And I paid $19, real money to Steam, for the extra package that included that ship! And, of course, that early in the game, I didn't have enough ISK's to purchase insurance to cover it. So, I lost a really great ship for exploring, because I was too busy trying to read text that was too small and didn't realize I was under attack!

That's another thing. The game should have more, and louder sound effects when your under attack!

Don't get me wrong. I like the game so far and will probably upgrade from the trial version.

In Balancing the Books (7 of 10), the Ancient Ship Structure uses the old hacking mechanism (the module just cycles till it access it) instead of the new hacking mini game.

I've almost finished all of the basic tutorials, with the exception of Advanced Military. The only one I found to be a challenge was Exploration, and that's just because the tutorial didn't seem to explain (to me anyway) how to do scanning effectively and easily.

A visual indication as an example would probably work best, maybe an in-game video?

It would be nice if you could address the issue with multiple books of the same skill being given.

i managed to get through all the tutorials...

However, they were not so clear on instructions on what to do..

I realize the current system is much better than when the game first came out.. But there are a lot of room for improvement..
A clearer tutorial instructions and easing of the learning curve would do wonders to retain a lot of newbies who might otherwise be turned away from the difficulty curve.

Hi all,

two things:
1. support for #3 - "Balancing the books" needs a Miner I provided on mission asking to "shoot" asteroids. Or proper help on using market!

2. Once 1. is fixed you can make tutorial asking to undock in pod and explain what yellow and red skulls mean. Aura could easily mark player's pod with suspect and then criminal status. Alternatively Aura might ask new one to visit some gate in Null and take pod express from there :) Apparently as soon as possible new player should get accustomed with loss of ship/pod.

Providing the Industry skill book as a precursor to the Industry career tutorials would be nice :) of course not providing it means people have to use their brains, read instructions, and otherwise engage in the cerebral side of the game.

I had the joy of trying to talk some new players through the exploration tutorials. It turns out that reading the mission description is quite hard: probably because there is just so much of it, and it is small print on a huge screen, and people from all over the gaming universe have gotten used skipping over mission text.

I even point them at the EVE Uni videos and tell them, "watch this, you lazy sods!" But they persist with warping to anomalies, losing their rookie ships full of quest items to pirate NPCs, and otherwise getting frustrated as a result of coming to EVE from theme park games and never having learned to go ten pin bowling without bumber rails.

I think for some people, having spent so much of their gaming life being coaxed by the game (shoot this! There is an enemy coming from that direction!) and told, "keep your limbs inside the ride" they find themselves plonked down in the vast jungle of EVE play possibilities entirely confused because there is no little car to ride in this playground. "How do I keep my limbs inside the car," they ponder, "when there is no car?"

To paraphrase Sarah Connor, there is no car but the one you build for yourself. And for theme-parkers arriving in EVE for the first time, this is terrifying.

I only joined 3-4 days ago and I wanted to put my thoughts down here.

My friend and i have been looking for a Space MMO to get into. We were playing PS2 for a while, but got tired of FPS. ive never really been into the whole RPG thing (WOW and the like). I absolutely hate games with fairies, trolls, gobblins, or weapons that are impossible to hold under the normal laws of physics. i just hate them. Having said that, i really do love video games and i really do want to get really into a game that i like. EVE Online, i think fits that bill. (star citizen is on my radar scree, though).

So starting off, when me and my buddy (we are 28 and 30 respectively) learned about EVE Online we were super excited. initially i really didnt like the idea of paying a monthly subscription for a game. im not a big fan of paying for anything digital, and with the advent of Free-to-Play games, paying for a game now makes even less sense. But, I discovered the Buddy program and i got a 20 day trial. the Buddy program i used game me 7 million ISK upon signing up, and when i activate my paid account i will get a new ship and 275 million ISK. That 7 Million ISK was a HUGE help in the beginning, as it allowed me to make mistakes with out suffering too much.

I agree that EVE has a huge Learning curve. Having said that, i can understand how some people might enter the game with 0 knowledge and feel very overwhelmed, even in the tutorial missions. however, i now feel (this may change with time) that if you did not realize that EVE has a huge learning curve when starting the game, its your own fault for not doing the proper research before starting the game. i watched a few Youtube Tutorials for beginners which was enough to get me through the first set of tutorial missions. Even with the huge learning curve, getting a handle of the very basic stuff (navigating the UI, etc...) wasn't all that hard.

One thing i do want to say, is that in no other game that i have gotten into, have i received the amount of support that i have received so far. even with the great support i am very dubious as it feels like EVE is FULL of scams. this is a bit disappointing, and although this aspect does make the 'universe' more realistic, its a pretty big turn off for me as a new player. on the brighter side of things, the fact that a Corp such as EVE University even exists, is a testament to the amount of support that one can find in EVE. though it seems like you have to GO LOOKING for help (which isnt necessarily bad thing).

So far i have only finished the Industry Tutorial. once i did that me and my friend thought we could just start mining and making ISK right then. my buddy and i tried to pick a system that was near a border region to make our "home base", if you will. we started mining (grinding) and mining. it got boring real fast. i tried venturing into a 0.6 or a 0.5 system, but i ended up getting destroyed twice (that 7 million really helped out). at that point i just felt lost. i didnt know what to do or where to to go. as of this writing, i now realize how naive i was.

my plan now is to go back to the station that i started out in and finish all of the tutorials for the different careers. i heard about something called 'sisters of EVE' that i believe is a type of tutorial one does after the career tutorials, that covers PvE and PvP (if im not mistaken). maybe after all the tutorials and SoE, maybe i should join EVE University? once i finish with all of that, im still not sure what to do, i guess join a corp that likes doing what ever i want to end up doing (mining, PVP, etc...). Maybe i join EVE University first and then i join a proper Corp? so is that basically the nuts and bolts of the game? Do the tutorials....pick a career...join a corp...grow as a player...IS THAT THE BASIC IDEA OF THE GAME (obviously boiled down to the most basic elements of the game)?

other random thoughts as a noob

the in game tutorials are pretty good, but i can understand that the tutorials will never be able to cover the game in its totality, mainly because the game is SOO complex, SOO deep, that you could spend 200 hours in tutorials and still not cover the game in its totality.

This game isnt for everyone, as it requires you to invest a significant portion of your RL to playing. it can be tough for someone that can only afford 1-2 hours per day only, especially in the beginning when your character sux and EVERYONE is better than you. it can be very discouraging, very quickly.

the Rookie Help chat room can be a bit noisy at times, with your question getting drowned out by others. But the fact that it even exists and works as well as it does is a huge plus in my book. again awesome levels of support here.

what i would like is for someone to take me (and my buddy) under their wing and teach us. like a mentor, but how boring that must be for the mentor? he is paying to play a game that he then goes and spends most of the time teaching new players how to play. Kudos to those people who do that, as i would never do that unless its a personal friend of mine. i feel it a waste of money. having said that, those that do mentor, are gods among men/women. they put aside time and ISK just to teach noobs how to play, that is a noble effort my friend and i salute those that do it.

i really liked mining, but after downloading Halada's miner's guide 3.0, its way to complex for me. Excel spreadsheets? are you mad? that sounds like work to me, and i play videos games to avoid work. if i wanted to get all complicated with charts and spreadsheets, then i would just go get a job lol. so guess mining isnt for me, as its way to complicated for a 'game'. i guess im looking for something that is not nearly as complex as with mining/industry (anything with the markets), but not repetitive grinding...any suggestions?

Been a while since i did the rookie missions. But one thing really frustrated me, was lack of ammo at the station i was doing them from. I felt like flying around finding ammo a waste of time. Perhaps give a nice stack of startup ammo? Of course plenty for the tutorial missions is tiny for any real player so i don't think it would mess with the economy.

maybe tell all people doing the tuturial about all the HELP stickies in forums, just an overview list that they can bookmark in their browsers. this way they learn about a lot of community efforts to help people along in EVE onilne.

You can scale text in EVE, open the ESC menu to scale it.

The exploration career mission 'An introduction to Cosmic Signatures' has you fly your new unfitted racial exploration frigate to a deadspace pocket, where you find an Exploration Supplies container with core probe launcher, probes, data and relic analyzers.

This should also contain a mobile depot and instructions for using it to refit in space.

I played 3 years ago and dropped then came back this week

I forgot everything. Going back to wow or gw2 is easy...going back to eve is nightmarish for a noob. The first thing I was very disapointed is that there are no audio/video tutorials in game. The basic tutorial is not user friendly and could be redone so so much better and more efficiently with video.

Second thing I spent hours on after the basic tutorial was "how the F*** do I find asteroid fields to start mining"
I should have remembered this from 3 years ago that you HAVE to know to go into the display and check the option to show asteroid fields. THIS has to be the most ridiculous thing for a new player. The option should NOT be hidden like this and it is very frustrating.

The rest I guess you can slowly learn by mistake but the whole starter week seem to be 80% waste of time trying to understand the UI and clicking ridiculously small buttons in a very user un-friendly UI.

I sincerely hope that the UI will be improved, in 3 years it seems nothing really changed.

What is needed is a series of video tutorial covering all chapters of the game. For example I have ZERO idea how to use the map and what its benefit is. I can t seem to rotate it on its X, Y or Z axis. I don t know if I can highlight regions, show where combat is happening etc.

If feels like waking up 10.000 years in the future in a ship in the middle of space knowing nothing about space piloting and trying to understand an alien language to pilot the ship.

TLDR The game needs some serious video tutorials on every parts of the game

Yes. Issue is that at current stage, it would require a WHOLE lot of work to add videos, which already can be accessed by watching a bit of youtube on the side (I know, it should be in game to which I agree).

As for finding an asteroid, asteroid belts are listed by default in the right click menu. Which the tutorial teaches you to use.

UI has changed (inventory tweeks, market tweeks, radial menu, Ewar icons, E menu, movement of undock buttonTwisted), but yes, still room for improvement.

Button size isn't small, that really depends on resolutions you are playing with, I never ever thought of the buttons being to small.

As for your map. You are using a flattened universe map, which works exactly like a paper map. You can't do anything with it. Unflatten it (in map menu) and suddenly you can rotate all you want.

In same map menu, you have a 1001 options for you to highlight on the map, including ships and pods killed.

Well, the tutorials seem quite fine to me. The game is extremely complex, but the tutorials are extremely helpful and, to me, quite clear. I haven't encountered anything which would confuse me.

On the other hand, inclusion of some videos would be a welcomed addition.

Leading on from my comments in Usdom Chaffmen's thread, Mission 3 of the business tutorial 'Balancing the Books' should provide a Miner 1 when the mission is accepted.

This. I am on this level and thought I was going mad! Am I right in thinking I have to fail this mission or can I go and do something else and come back to this once I have acquired the Miner 1?

Thanks guys, and really enjoying Eve so far!
