Returning to Eve - new character or not?

Can I have a little bit of advice?

I played Eve back in 2005-6 and am looking to start up again.

I realise that LOTS has changed since I played last, but wondered if people think it would be better to continue with my existing character, or restart with a new character?

On one hand, my existing characters probably have more stuff/skills than a new character would have, but on the other hand, the stuff they have is probably horribly outdated by now...

Thoughts?

Ah, and Haritoni was a character which I made during a brief retry a few years ago, this one (Sinari) was my primary character back when I played a lot, so would be the one I'd keep, if any.

Unless you have an overwhelming desire to retrain fitting skills or utterly tarnished the reputation of your previous character, I can see no reason to ever restart. Except for hacking, I can't easily think of a skill that is not viable anymore today.

But seriously. Don't start over... add your character to Eveboard.com and maybe share the skills you have so people can give you tips. If you had Learning Skills you even have no freely allocatable Skillpoints. So... dont start over =)

OK, I'll keep the character then - he was reasonably law abiding AFAIR.

I suppose even if the stuff he has is a bit rubbish nowadays, it's still better than a totally new character would have.

I think the thing I was worried about was that other people may have expectations from an '8 year old character' that won't be quite valid...

becareful what you trash. You may find somthing fitted to a ship that it worth quite a bit now due to module changes etc. Check the market before you trash it and if it doesnt show on the market or in contracts you have yourself a nice little earnerLol

Quoting "you will die" in EvE is fail Chars dont die in EvE. Unless you have a heart attack eek.

Keep your old character, he probably has a bunch of free SP to spend.

Keep your old character, he probably has wayyy better skills than a new one.

Why waste the character's skill training, you can always go and do the new player tutorials to get your skills back up to speed

Yeah, I'll need to do the tutorials... I have forgotten pretty much everything!

Is there any way to get a free/cheap 'rookie ship' so I can risk that while re-learning rather than the cruiser I was flying when I quit... I'll probably want to work quickly up through frigate etc while keeping my cruiser in standby for when I'm confident enough to start using it again.

You get a free noobship at every station you dock in your pod,
as long as you don't have a ship there already.

These ships can be fit regularly and have their own bonuses. (except rigs)
Don't underestimate them.

Starting a new toon will be a complete waste of SP and cash you spent to get said SP...

If I could do it over again I wouldn't pick a toon with a name starting with 'F'. Reroll and pick a toon name starting with Z. Just sayin.

Rolling a character starting with "F" is ALOT better then starting one with "A" but, in all major fleet engagements I've almost never been primary...

Don't worry about it. I've got a 2 year old alt that I'm passing off as a complete newbie that just returned to the game. People will believe anything.

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Expectation is that thing one should learn to ignore in EVE

as many have said, starting a new char means you need to train a lot of skills you remember taking for granted.
if you have forgotten how to play, i actually reccomend doing the tutorial missions, especially the profession training ones,
the tutorial used to be ****, but it's MUCH better now then 8 years ago

also, check EVERYTHING your old char had, some "micro" modules, and a few named versions of regular items no longer drop for some reason, and are thus worth quite a bit of money,
micro smartbombs are several million each, named autotargeters are effortless to fit, and IMPOSSIBLE to find, but common enough back then so your old char might have some

if you are lucky enough to have been using "harvester" mining drones back then, they are now worth 120m EACH :)

EDIT: even if you feel like starting "fresh", new chars start with basically nothing in skills, so no matter what you did with your old char, it WILL save you training time somewhere
