I will be checking on this thread and updating the original post with the common scams and their perpetrators so that corps can "red" them to protect their newbies. Please put your reports in this thread.

Worst part is that it was a similar name to a friend of a friend of his. So he asks his friend, "Is this legit?" "Yeah, that is my friend"

There was lots of drama. Sad

Edit: Before you say, "Newbies don't have that much ISK" - he converted game times and he bought a pilot then wanted to buy a ship for it. So in a very short space of time, he has paid with real money for the subscription, the pilot and the ship.

Just an idea , but maybe it's worth posting this in the newbie forum - but with an explanation this time. Might stop it happening to a newbie again.

Most of us here have not only seen this kind of scam before , but possibly even run it Pirate

Give information on the scam please if you are going to post them.

The email has all the making of a scam but if you want to help newbis fill them in on how scames work otherwise they will be convenced that such scams are lagit!!!
The I need quick isk so 1/2 price sell ALWAYS a scam! You can just sell on the market to buy orders normally no cheeper than 80% what sell orders are so why waste time making contracts to liquidate assest for a loss much greater? That is your clue this is a scam.

What they might do.
1. You can rename ships. These Navy ships might just be there non-navy version. Check the top left corner for the proper marking and ALWAYS veiw info ON EACH AND EVERY ITEM IN CONTRACT to make sure what is being sold is what they say is.

2. There might be some extra numbers their. Normaly not a 000 as the game shortains these and 20,000,000 will say 20(mil) so you will get 9's or other numbers at the end to avoid this. LOOK AT THE PRICE CLOSELY

3. Along with isk items may me required in a trade, this will be in red, so you may pay 20(mil) but miss that it says you will give 1 PLEX and thus give them a PLEX with the 20(mil). Popular used in scams like these that target new players that gaine ISK selling PLEX as they might have PLEX on them. ALWAYS CHECK WHAT ITEMS YOU WILL GIVE.

4. NEVER EVER USE THE HONOR SYSTEM!!! No contract! NO TRADE!!!

5. READ THE CONTRACT, than after you have read and verified.... READ IT AGAIN!!!

If it sounds to good to be true IT IS. As stated above Buy orders on popular items are normally in line with sell orders 5-10% under or less and less popular items MIGHT be 20% less (not really seen on ships ESPECIALLY navy issues). So why would they waste time and isk trying to sell it to you for a 50% loss?

Keep in mind piracy and scaming are part of the game. You WILL NOT BE REMBURSED. The scammer WILL NOT BE PUNISHED! So keep this in mind when making deals. Most newbies get scamed not cause they are dumb and stupid, but they are used to games where this is not the case they will be re-embursed and scammers will be banned so there is no reason to watch out for scams.

Scam #2 Forcing PvP or Kill rights.

Basically someone tricks you into giving them kill rights.

1 Leaving cans for you to loot. Might say free stuff. If you loot they get kill rights and WILL DESTROY YOUR SHIP. ALWAYS. If the can is BLUE it means they have released rights to the can and you can freely loot with no recorse so if it is not BLUE it is a set up. If you want to %^*($ with them get in the freebe ship for your race you get every time you die and loot the cans Twisted

2. Bugging you so you will shoot them. Done many ways normally they will red themself to you. If they do this 95% of the time they believe they can take you. They will have friends ect. Or may go back and get a PvP fit ship ect. Don't fall for the bait and ignore them. Most comonly done in missions where they can use the RATS as aid in there assualts RE- Ninja Salvagers. If they steel loot and go red they probaly baiting you.

3. Targeting you, Hoping you have a target slot open and will auto target them back, and either you make the mistake and shoot them, or your drones are set on agressive and attack them. Look out for this.

4. getting in the way of AoE weapons, such as smart bombs. You didn't mean to hit them, but you did and its on!

5. No such thing as an arranged 1 on 1, unless you know the guy. If they are winning you might think it was 1 on 1 if they are lossing you will find support jumping in. Also they may be fleeted with a fleet booster in the system that incresses their abilities unseen to you. Don't agree to 1 on 1 from strangers.

Remember the more tempting someone is making it to aggress them the more likely you are being baited.

Don't let my frosty appearance and cold attitude fool you. Once you get to know me you'll find I'm a complete and total *

Come be one of us.

You get an invite (or ask) to join a corp. Suuuure you are allowed in sometime right away sometimes they will have questions to make sure YOU are on the up and up, but this may also help to create a sense of them being on the Up and Up.

What MAY happen to you.

1. You have to pay isk to join. Dont do this be on your way.

2 High taxes. Had a corp invite me first thing I did check tax rate was 50%... NOPE!

3. They can kill you now! Wierd but being in a corp means they can kill you.

4. You are vaunarable to war decs. Might be a dummy corpe to get newbies in so another corp that is wardeced can get kills.

5. We can hull all your stuff to our base for you so you can transfer. They can also not give that stuff back.

6. Contract hauling so you are sure you get your items or isk that will cover them. You get your items delivered to there station smart you huh? NOPE! They boot you from the corp and you are not allowed access into there station but your stuff is inside. Now to get it back you have to pay a ransom. DONT PAY!! Cause they will most likely take yur isk and still keep your stuff.

Always go into any team event relizing your "team" might not be on the up and up. Treat them as if they are scamming you. You want to be part of the team so you might have to give some, but accept that what you risk may be lost so don't have them move ALL your items. Keep you station you are based at as a back up with supplies incase you get totaly screwed by a new corp. Also check the forums many corps get reported here for scaming.

Contract and trade scams.

1 Contracts for courior that have large volume so you will need a hauler not a combat ship with a HIGH collataral. You pay, start to move goods and get suicide ganked in route they get the colataral! Also you might be sent through low sec on the hopes you wont make it. Ways to avoid? Have an alt take the contract ant than contract the item to the charecter that will haul it so they cant track you. Go a longer route as they will camp the shortest. If it is an out of the way station (so they can easly see who is hauling) than take contract wait untill the next day to haul you should have at least 24 hours to move it.

2. You see a n item on a buy order for a good price! now you see an tiem in same system or close to it that is selling kinda cheep. So you buy 80,000 of them and off you go to sell it to the buy order. Once you try to sell the contract is no good! What happened? Well their is a skill that lets you make buy orders without all the mony to pay for them. If when an order is filled you can not pay your order is deleated. They NEVER have the isk to cover it in this case and you just bought all the items from an alt of his and are stuck with a product!

3. Contracts that look good making you buy up items (from there alts) but the contract is for that number EXACTLY so you need 100,000 of them or NO SALE. These are items no one will get 100,000 (or another number) of and thus never fill the order and you bought some over priced items from various alts/corp mates hoping you could make the money back.

4. Simple one but works. Just placing items on market over priced hoping someone not paying attention and buys!

5. Better version! BUIYING OUT A N ITEM!!! Now the station is blank. Relist the items many times so someone checks for whats in station first, say for ammo, they only see their listings. All are 1-2 digits more BUT since they all look the same length you don't notice that they are over priced and just buy to get on with missioning and you just paid 8000isk each for those advanced cruise missles instead of 800!

6. listing sell orders and buy orders at inflated or deflated pricing to alter the regions avrage to influance buyer/sellers.

As always if it is to good to be true... IT IS!

Don't let my frosty appearance and cold attitude fool you. Once you get to know me you'll find I'm a complete and total *

The did you really fall for this scam? Next time just give me half the isk I will kick you in the nuts and we will call it a day scams Blink

1. Lotto. Buy a ticket win money. Only ones that win are alts or corp mates. Don't give them.

2. I m leaving the game and giving aways isk. If you send me isk I will double, triple pay 10x ect back. Right up there with the prince in nigera that needs mony to get his inharadence if you give him isk you desirve what happens. Want to mess with them? send them the small isk to see if it is lagit, do this on some alts or have corp mates do it. Normally they will give you as promissed wanting you to give that BIG pay once you see it is not a scam. Than tell them thanks but it would be GREEDY of you to try to get more Cool

3. I JUST GOT SCAMED, GRIEFED AND AM A NEWBI!!! PLEASE HELP!! Might be true, might be an alt wanting free isk. Your call. If you are kind harted you might want to help but don't over help. Also anounce you helped so others know they have been helped and don't need more isk. Try tpo only help those that ask in channles you monitor or chat in that have been active and seem to be new and not scamming alts.

4. Banks. If you deposit isk with us we will loan it out with intrest and pay you intrest on your deposit. Banks in game take to much time and effort and with all the scammers laoning mony at intrest is not profitable thus not gaining returns. this is a few things when you see this.
- Just a flat out scam to get your mony
- Someone trying to run a bank, they will fail and/or get tired of it and will most likely keep you isk, or if they are nice MAY give what they can back but most likely lost a good deal in their attempt.
There is no isk to be made here in either case and 99% of the time it is a flat out scam.

5. Buying shares and or stock in a corp, funding a corp or person to do expensive profit scheems with a promise for a cut. With thee way EvE market works putting players in compatition most of the time the isk gained is not much more than isk spent. So windfalls are not expected and even if this wasn't a scam (it is though trust me) it will become one once they do not gain the mass profit predicted. - Sometimes, IF you know the person and trust them to do right buy you than you might not get scamed but prepare for a loss just the same and only IF YOU KNOW THE PERSON perferable in RL not just in game.

High pressure scames (in game or e-mail)

i am a lagitamite employee of CCP. You have been reported for doing this. You need to go to our website and do this (link here) or your account will be banned in 24 hours, 2 hours ect ect.

Most likly the site is a fake dummy site made to LOOK lagit. You login, and they have your info. Also once you fail to login may take you to the true site that says an error so when you login again it works and you think Oh I just messed typed the Pass Word.
NEVER FOLLOW LINKS always go to the website yourself to verify. Never give out your infor or password if asked in game. You are logged on, CCP knows you know your password since you logged in and they HAVE yours already and have no need to ask. If this happens PETETION it. Even if it is lagit still go through the pettition and other sources to resolve the issue rather than directly with the contact. Simply explain you are contacting CCP in reguards to the issue ATT and thank them for bringing it to your attention.

If they get angry and make threats to cox you to responding it is most likely a scam CCP employes don't care what channles you go through to talk with them.

This goes for all things not just EVE.

Also the for mentioned scam is bannable and not suppored by EvE you CANNOT claim to be a CCP employee to bull off scams. Also scams can only be in game and never out of game. If you get scammed in game never threaten real world violence or harm on them you will be banned for this as such is against the rules.

Don't let my frosty appearance and cold attitude fool you. Once you get to know me you'll find I'm a complete and total *

Margin trading scam

This involves manipulating the local market, so that you will buy items from them at heavily inflated prices. In it's basic form it involves 2 market orders. One inflated sell order for you to buy and another inflated buy order for you to quickly cash in that sell order. They can cover up the inflated nature of the market orders by buying up all those items on the market and in doing so manipulating the market average to cover up what they are doing. When an inexperienced market player sees the situation he thinks he can make a nice amount of profit immediately for very little work. This is a variation on the: if it seems too good to be true, it is -situation.

What happens next is that you can safely buy the first order, but when you try to sell it the transaction fails and you are left with items, that you have a hard time selling forward at the prices you bought them. The reason for this is the margin trading skill. It allows you put up orders that cost more than you really can cover at that time. It's an invaluable tool to a legit trader, but also allows scammers to make fake market orders. The good news is that it can be spotted and you can also use common sense to avoid it.

The common sense approach is to know the worth of items you trade on the market. If you don't have that experience, ask a price check in one of the in-game channels made for such purposes or check at a site like eve-central to get a basic idea of the general price levels. If it is some weird specialty item, that you have no clue what it's worth or even used for, simply avoid it until you do. The scam is also much more likely to be used on such specialty items, since the market is easier to manipulate, the price for them fluctuates because of the low volume of trades and people don't generally know what they are really worth.

You can spot the scam by looking at the often ignored column of min volume in the market window. It will likely be something other than one and likely a large number at that, since some money is always invested in making a market order, so the minimum amount of the items the scammer is offering to buy in a single purchase has to be higher than the amount invested or the transaction won't fail.

This scam is easily avoided by common sense, but greed and the fact you can't lose the items entirely while trading using the market system can make you overconfident and ignore the dangers it too has. Just remember two things, if it's too good to be true, it is and be especially careful trading items you aren't familiar with.

everything is a scam, unless it isnt a scam, but most contracts in local are scams
