U.S. Congress is at it again....

In all of my years, I have not seen such abuse from Congress. If an attempt from Congress to pass something failed because of pressure from the people, it was dropped and forgot, but this is the first time I've seen Congress repeatedly try to slip something past us like this.

Is the government of the people, by the people, (no longer) for the people?

government should go back to doing things like they are depicted in "lincoln." where senators and representatives openly insult one another on the floor, conniving and wheedling votes this way and that.

ok, so it's probably still like that...without the open insults.

Pretty certain Franklin said something about periodic revolutions to throw off the yolk of a centralised Imperialistic government that ruled for itself, not the people.

Or is because Obama is half black he doesn't get the same treatment Bush did for pulling the same **** Blink

Oopsie, wrong one. I can see very well why the founders of the US are revered as intelectual men, giving they were writing the epitome of what it meant to be British down pen to paper. Its a pity they weren't on this side of the Atlantic really, finish what they started, but C'est la vie.

Actually sociologists do talk about the problem of punishment of crimes happening in isolation, without public awareness. Apparently socially shaming and blaming is a big deterrent, both for the convicted person and for people who might be thinking like him.

Examples: Lakota Native American solution-- Drive the offender 10 or so miles out, let them do a walk of shame home. West African solution-- Offender shaming day in a soccer (football) stadium. The get lashes Shocked, but no prison term. Next day they're back in the community, and the community self-enforces or forgives, depending on how things work out.

Its said a lot but follows true. Follow the money. Who stands to gain the most from this and find the obvious choices. Then look at the share holders and wade through the speaking chairs and find those actually pulling the strings.

In this case there would be a lot of cash coming from various palaces in the UAE as theyve been buying into media in an overhand and underhand way through third parties since the 90s.

What they stand to gain is anyones guess.

And +1 for public shaming of criminals. Although im a strong advocate for innocent until proven guilty which is why those accused should be kept secret until verdict is delivered.

Sad but true.

I'm not sure which part is worse, the fact that we have gotten to the point where we have "trial by media" as Graygor perfectly put it, or the fact that it exists because both the broadcasters and the audience largely believe it's entertainment.

People are quick to judge those on trial; forming their own opinions that are popularized by not just media "newscasts" but facebook, twitter, youtube, and any other method for Joe Random to get likes on their point of view. I wonder how entertaining this would be for people if they had to watch the sentence for those on trial. I don't mean the feel good of watching the guy be pronounced guilty... I mean sitting in and watching the guy get strapped to the table before a lethal injection or to watch him melt away in prison --either to watch his former life slip away day by day or simply to be shived violently in the shower.


Anyway, I now return you to the thread already in progress.

anyways, as I'm sick and tired of seeing in my country: current western world needs a political shakeup the size of.. well, maybe several nuclear payloads. And it might be closer than we think, if we are to believe in cliodynamics.

FYI, cliodynamics is a proposed multidisciplinary field that encompases sociology, mathematics and history to... "predict" the future.

Agree on this one, the reaction to the Media failing to convict Zimmerman was pretty revealing as to how their internal story works.
