All,

I am new ( as you can see ) but i have a broad question.

Question:
I have been looking around the forums and it appears that there is so much to do in that to be good at any one thing you must devote all your skills and time to that one thing.

I am having trouble finding what there is to do other than:
- PVP
- PVE
- Missions
- Mining
- Building
- WormHole
- Fleet Battles/Corp Battles
- Exploration

So is it true that if I wanted to do mining lets say, that I would have to devote all my time/skills/ISK to mining ?

You should check out this site:

And about having to devote all your skill training into one aspect of the game, that's not true (imo). You can be effective with non-maxed skills, plus a lot of skills carry over to other aspects of the game. If you want to mine, just start mining and train mining skills while you do it. If you want to pvp, just do pvp and train pvp skills while you do it! There's always a place or a corporation where you can learn new things with low skills, no matter what you want to get into.

Eve is very massive & the things you can do are many. To get good in an area, you do have to focus your skills somewhat. Which can be a downer in that it keeps you out of other areas.

Some people become a jack of all trades who can do everything, but not great at anything.

What probably happens to those that in up loving this game is you, open multiple accounts. Combat character, Industry character, Exploration character, you get my meaning.

I started with one account, soon got two, did two for a year, got third, now almost five years later 6 accounts. So I focus all my characters to be great at a couple of things each.

Now, what CCP recently introduced is Dual Character training on the same account. I am taking advantage of this mainly for training cyno alts on my open slots without stopping training on my main character for each account.

It is hard to say which route to take, because each player likes different things. You are doing right by reading forums. Get in your ship & go do the basic missions & the epic arc missions.

The most important advice I can give you is find a good corp with a good group of players to join. Eve is first and foremost a Mutliplayer game. You can solo this game, but really not as fun as when you find a good group to do things with.

To answer you first question the more time you devote to one thing the better you will be at it... Almost like real life Smile

As for mining if you want to be good at it you will need to spend a bit of time at it. Mining by itself is very boring but if that's what you want to do then go for it! If you get bored with that it doesn't take much to get into a frigate for PVP.

Keep in mind that being in a corporation that shares your goals makes it easier to achieve them. For example sitting in a belt solo mining or with Orca boosts and hauling support. Roaming solo in lowsec or with some corp mates that can scout and show you tips and tricks of PVP. Also unless you're completely antisocial it's nice to have people to BS with on Teamspeak while you watch rocks melt or stare at a gate.

Dont forget PI and stationtrading. You can do those on competettive level with only a few weeks of training. But on the other hand you can fly effectively BS in wormhole, nullsec anoms or L4 missions with about a month of training. You just have to tinker a bit with EFT and EveMON skill plans.

What I would suggest you do is, divide that list into two categories. One, being activities you can enjoy solo and the other being activities that require "group participation".

True, you will find some overlap but the number of times you will likely find yourself falling back on solo activity will be more often than you think -- so train accordingly.

Frequent group activity is best found in corps of 50 or more.

you can also group them into areas where there is a degree of skill overlap

missions + pvp have a degree of overlap, both need tank & dps skills etc
mining provides the resources for building
and so on

combat and industry focused skills however have very little overlap
initially I would suggest you choose 1 and focus on it for a year or two, and then think about exploring the other path

You don't have to devote all your skills to any one thing; It is your game, and whatever is fun for you is all that really matters.
You don't have to be *perfect* to play the game.

BUT: If you want a perfect miner, it takes time to skill that up. Several months at the minimum.
Same for a perfect PvP character.

The important thing for you is to figure out what YOU like, and go from there.
