Yo, friends! I'm trying to learn Spanish, but I don't have any way to practice hearing the language. I've had some structured education, so I can read it and write it and even speak it (slowly and like a 5 year old, anyway), but I can hardly understand a word of it. Does anyone have any good ideas (aside from moving to Spain) for psuedo-immersion?

Spanish Sesame street. No joke, I woke up at 4 am one morning many years ago, still half drunk, and there was Kermit the Frog speaking spanish. Took me 5 minutes to figure out what was going on. But I would seriously suggest watching because they do speak slower.

You need a pillow dictionary (Spanish speaking significant other), although if you're already in a relationship the other half may get a little miffed if you do this.

Seriously though children's TV in Spanish is good, anything with Spanish subtitles, or Spanish audio and subtitles in your native language will also be helpful (if you can keep up with the machine gun delivery). Spanish speaking friends are also good for practising on.

Take German instead so you can say things like "Naturwissenschaft" instead of "Scienca".

Heh, I think I can give some good advice here.

Spanish TV is your friend. Almost every popular American TV show and series is broadcast in Spain through digital channels, which means they're regularly ripped from TV/satellite/cable and are very easy to find on the internet. They're dubbed and the pace is a tad slower than live broadcast, and you will avoid nasty accents as they're dubbed into standard Castillian Spanish.

Some series easy to find in Spanish are: Bones, Castle, The Mentalist (El mentalista), Game of Thrones (Juego de tronos), Homeland, The Walking Dead, CSI Vegas/Miami/NYC, Person of Interest, The Following (Vigilados), Boardwalk Empire, NCIS Los Angeles, Numb3rs, House, Criminal minds (Mentes criminales), Spartacus (Spartacus, sangre y arena)...

Also many documentaries from channels like History Chanel, Discovery Channel, National Geographic and so are dubbed and broadcast. History Channel documentaries in Spanish are known for a rather slow pace of speech.

Actually it's more like this:

Engineering an Empire - Russia (La construcción de un imperio: Rusia), Spanish dub.

Roses are red / Violets are blue / I am an Alpha / And so it's you

You can search for a spanish speaking corp in game, i can direct you to some of them.

Most use TS or some other comms software, but you might be exposed to the broad range of accents that spanish offers.

Most corps involves Mexican, Central and South Americans and Spaniards. (for those who dont know Mexico is North America)

Most are eager to teach you and some members speak fluent english just in case you get stuck with a meaning.

Indeed. Continent-wise, there is only North and South America, and even then they are the same landmass, only divided physically by constructing the Panama Canal.

But Central America is most just a convenient monicker to denote the countries South of Mexico down to but not including Columbia. It's also mixed up in a kerfluffle of demarcations with Latin America being considered everything South of the USA and parts of the Caribbean, Middle America being Mexico and Central America, and the contentious Spanish America which is any land settled by Spaniards...which is literally the whole of the North and South with Brazil being the exception.

It's all fairly ridiculous and means nothing ultimately. Best to just name individual applicable countries to the situation.

Most online dictionaries have an audio feature, which reads a word to you.

http://www.spanishdict.com/

This one will read English or Spanish to you.

It can even be used to hear a Spaniard talk English. Try something like "chicken sandwich" and it will say "shigaan sanmwich". Twisted

Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling.

Awesome advice, I'll definitely try some of these out. I've been trying Spanish TV, but I understand so little of it (my vocab is pretty terrible) I wonder if it even helps. Maybe it just helps to hear the pace, even if I don't understand every single word? Game of thrones sounds fun, too. It'll be cool to watch Jon Snow die in Spanish.

Pretty sure the mamacita route will be the best, so I'll try that one first ;). I hope she doesn't judge me for watching sesame street in Spanish... in bed.
