I am at a crossroads. Should I buy a cruiser (vexor), or a mining barge? (procurer) Any suggestions? Thanks.

Well, that honesty depends on what you want to do. Do you enjoy mining or blowing things up?

My vote is for the vexor but only because I enjoy blowing things up.

Depends what you're going to use it for. Mining Barges are the Prime ship for Mining thanks to their bonuses and their ability to fit strip miners. Not to mention their large Ore hold. These things are usually around 33 Million and the strip miners are about 1.4 Mil a piece (At least those are the prices from where I get them)

If you're pretty dang Poor you could go for the Vexor, being the cheaper ship at around the usual Cruiser price and the normal Mining lasers being pretty cheap as well. The good thing about Cruisers is that they're a lot faster than Mining barges, which is better for places like low or nul sec mining, but you're still losing out on those important bonuses.

My Opinion would be to go for a Mining barge if you want to mine.

Well, I would like to pick the ship that can turn the most profit.

Barges are better for mining.

The Vexor would be better for missions.

I still think the Barge would get more profit if you're willing to sit in belts all day.

Barge is for mining, Vexor is for shooting.

There is no point to making profit if you are not enjoying the game while doing it. Choose what you want to do then optimize your money making around that instead of trying to make money without thinking of what you like.

One ship to rule them all! Go fit up a venture and ninja your way through low sec rocks. The a quick swap from miners to auto cannon and you are ready to be a surprise reverse gank in a FW back water.

Then finally there is the dreaded cyno venture. Always worry about a venture derping around a gate when in hot drop country.

I did the same thing but with a procurer when trying to stop some belt gankers in 0.7 space. Swapped the Strip miner for a Neut and slapped a warp scram and a webifier and tanked it to pieces. I just sat about and watched as Concord did my work for me.

I wouldn't mine in high sec these days. It's infested with gank-kiddies.

Unless you are planning in using multiple chars, combatvessels pay out better.
Also they are more "fun" than mining.

it's not like missions are a lot more exciting than mining, but they do pay better...

This may be the strangest quesiton I've seen yet on these forums. As others have stated, mining barges are for mining, vexor's are for shooting. There's no real comparison between the ships. Decide which career you want to go for.
Options include :
Mining (usually pays best in groups and unless you really like it should probably be avoided on solo characters, getting the procurer to save up for a retriever or hulk is a valid plan)
Faction warfare (use a frigate to get started)
Missions (vexor can do level 2's and some level 3's, but you'll need a Dominix for good money),
Incursions (Not sure what gallente ships are used in incursions, but this is some of hte highest isk/hr)
Wormholes (use either a brutix or proteus, you'll need a corp though)
Exploration (great low sp isk, you'll want a BC for the higher up high sec combat sites)
Piracy (highest learning curve but arguably the most fun)
Scamming (ship doesn't matter)
Awoxing/Safari's (get a catalyst or other max dps blaster boat)
High sec ganking (catalyst and go kill miners instead of joining them, this is an extremely fast train)
