Long Range Missile Ship for Beginners?

Hello, new player here. Since I started playing EVE about 3 weeks ago I have been trying to get into as many things as I can, to see what I like before investing a lot of time. For PvP, I've come to the conclusion that long range missile combat is what I want to do. I bought a Caracal, got its range up to about 45km and that was great fun but I know you can get much longer range than that with missiles. So does anyone know a good ship I could train for, to use as a long range missile ship for fleet roams? Sorry if my question is not specific enough, can not really be more specific than that at the moment.

Try out the Cerberus, after 1.1 it will be very good for the application you need it for. Also take a look at the Tengu. C:

Heavy Missile Caracal can reach out to around 95km with perfect skills. 85 with avg skills.

More helpful for a newer player: there are two general-purpose skills to boost your missile range, Missile Bombardment (increasing missile flight duration by 10% per level) and Missile Projection (increasing missile velocity by 10% per level), which will stack with each other; in addition, each level of Caldari Cruiser you train will improve the velocity of light missiles, heavy missiles, and heavy assault missiles launched from the Caracal by 10% per level.

With Missile Bombardment IV, Missile Projection IV, and Caldari Cruiser IV, you'll be able to fire standard heavy missiles from a Caracal and hit targets at seventy kilometers out or better (depending on how much maneuvering they do).

Classic beginner sauce:
HM caracal with 2 sensor dampeners. That "just a caracal" kiting beyond enemy range has surprise nuisance :)

Modern sauce:
HAM/RML caracal pushing decent gank/tank at 20-40km.

Note: nowadays RML on a caracal does pretty much the same applied damage on big ships as HML, but also hits small stuff. Nobody uses HML...

I would agree on the RML Caracal, but disagree with the nobody uses HMLs (probably in jest).

A HML sniper wing with sensor damps and rigor rigs works quite nicely.

The Cerberus is king of the long range HML right now. Getting a nice buff soon too (RIGHT CCP! - please leave me a utility high!)

You can get about 90km with a Kestrel and it should be faster to train into.

You clearly missed the "3 week old toon" part... Roll

To the OP, go with a Caracal with either lights or rapid lights. My favorite ship at the moment if a Navy Caracal with T2 Rapids... fun little ship. IF you're getting into PVP try a Condor with lights.

The Navy Scythe works well with Rapid Lights as well, and is quite fast.

But it lacks the range bonus that most Caldari missile ships get.

The Rapid Light Missile Caracal is an excellent ship to get into if you are a fan of missile combat.

It is fast, tanky enough and has a huge engagement profile so you can have lots of uses regardless of where you are fighting.

That is the Way, the Tao.

Balance is everything.

That's fine for mission pve (not incursions though) and pvp'ing in smaller stuff, but chances are you'll end up stuck in a 150 million isk frig shooter (Cerb) or bait Drake, tops. Unless you go Mim and Typhoon or Navy Phoon.

This. Talwars are awesome as long as you have someone else to point the enemy for you - i.e., great for fleet roams, as OP wants it. Beyond that, it depends on what the fleet he's flying with flies.

As for what to train for - that depends. I personally love Tengus, but they may be a bit expensive for a new char. On the other hand, Caracal and soon Cerberus' performance is amazing right now for a reasonable price.

Why would training the Caldari cruiser skill improve the velocity of light missiles? It doesn't say anything about it in the skill description.

Look at the properties of the ship.

With missile velocity rigs, a caracal can hut further out.

Later, look into the bellicose. It does not hit as far, but works well in fleets by providing target painters.

Also, do not over look the corax or talwar. These two missile destroyers can be very fun.
