No idea who james 315 is, but I can tell you this much about him...he's not very original. This was the first "random" male toon to pop up in character creation. I couldn't care less what he looks like, I don't play him.

Exploration has been and is still a good ISK maker.

The trick is to first do a little bit of research via Star Map stats. Look for areas with low population, low amount of jumps, low amount of NPC kills, etc. Exploration requires a lot of traveling too so it's a good idea to set up multiple 'Bases Of Operation' in the various areas you've selected. High skills and top equipment will also help increase your chances to quickly get the good loot.

The Named Combat sites and DED's - Cosmic Signatures - is where you'll find the good loot, not in Relic or Data sites. A few Cosmic Anomalies will randomly spawn Commander NPC's and also escalate to expedition so it's a good idea to run those if you don't have any Combat Signatures available.

Good luck to you and welcome back to Eve.

How can piracy not be a career?
And where's ganking?

Just because people do it as a hobby' doesn't mean it can't be a career choice.

What ever you do fulltime is your career.
It doesn't depend on what others think about it.

Furthermore can you do several things at once, like being a pirating explorer.

Don't categorize the game like that. That line of thinking just reduces your freedom of choice.

You could try the interesting pvp/pve mix of ninja salvaging! Good ISK for a begginer and newb friendly. Bonus tear harvesting potential, if you're into that.

I semk-afk mine while I read/research stuff on my second monitor. For the minimal concentration required you can make a fair bit of ISK. Then when I actually want to have fun I go roaming in low for PVP or Exploration, maybe some missions with friends (solo missions are boring).

Piracy can definately be a 'carreer' but as everything it requires planning, patience, and good use of the various game mechanics. Ganking or suspect baiting is an option, the ceiling of your income is actually defined by the amount of stupid & lazy you encounter instead of hardcoded values like loot tables or invention chances. Messing with other people's industrial processes outside of hisec could potentially net your their produce / cargo / ransom / tears.

That doesn't mean a person doing this has to abstain from PVE or anything. On the contrary, lowsec income levels have recently been buffed by the security tags, and gaining back sec stat has become way easier / faster. I wouldn't consider myself a 'true pirate' but for our band of lowsec villains life is pretty good at the moment. As Solstice said, don't limit yourself too much by strict categorization. I do all kinds of things on my main, some things better then others. Some call me a pirate, others do business with me. The game isn't that black and white, it's more about acting on oppurtunities through some moral lens / online persona and the SP and experience you have built up.

One thing I disagree on with Mr. Solstice is the perception of others. As soon as other people are starting to categorize you, you've affected the world. I consider that an important bit of the players = content argument. Then again, it does usually come forth from your most obvious activities, my point is merely that it's up to you whether you want to push a certain image or let that develop naturally.

James 315 is a guy who likes to bump ice miners.

To the OP: Run incursions. It's like mission running, repetitive, but pays better.

Hello all. New guy here, and I'm wondering what different careers there are for a new pilot to get into. I want to point out that I'm looking for a career as opposed to a hobby. I'll give an example; from what I've been reading online, piracy is actually a hobby, not a career....evidently you can make some cash at it, but generally speaking you lose more money than you make. Many people suggest having an industrial main and pirating with your alt. So to me, piracy sounds like a hobby. I'm looking for job to specialize in that offers advancement, a positive cash flow, and can be done by one character without support toons or wealthy main characters.

From what I've gathered, there is:
1) PvE- missions running...seemed fun at first, but honestly a little repetitive
2) PvP/ FW- might be a decent fit because I do enjoy PvP in other games
3) Mining- Can be a great moneymaker, but potentially boring
4) Freight hauling- this actually really appeals to me, but it seems the only way to make money at it is by joining a huge corp like red frog/ black frog
5) Working the market- Arg. I'd rather watch grass grow
6) Exploration/ survey- this sounds kind of cool, but can you make cash at it and does it stay interesting?
7) Bounty hunting- or is it only a hobby?
8) Manufacturing- I guess you sit at the market and build ships? Not my thing

So what have I missed? I don't mean to sound negative, that's a lot more types of gameplay than the vast majority of MMO's out there, I just want to make sure I haven't overlooked something in EVE that I might really enjoy. I'd also love to hear people's thoughts on the ones I've listed, especially in regards to how lucrative they can be or how boring/ hard to get into.

Thanks in advance.

I personally would go with 1, 3, 4, 5, and 8. At the same time.
You can 1 and 3 for isk and materials for 8 then 4 the product from 8 and your loot from 1 to the market for 5.
Op success.
