(I tried to use the search function, but it returns an error, so I'm not sure how many threads on this subject already exist.)

Hey Guys!

I don't like the way EVE launches, compared to the way it used to launch. I'll explain what I would like to happen.

The game used to launch like this:
  • Double-click shortcut on desktop

  • {Game goes full-screen}
  • Fancy login screen with current expansion animations and ambient music, fields to put in your name and password and a start button
  • "Connecting" voice of Aura when you hit enter

  • [loading bars]
  • Character screen with news
  • [loading bars]
  • In-game

  • I really liked this. EVE had a "pretty face" so to say.

    For some reason, CCP decided to fix what wasn't broken (in my opinion) and now the game launches like this:
  • Double-click shortcut on desktop

  • Launcher screen with news, CCP adds, nice picture of current expansion, some links to websites, a progress bar, a start button and fields to put your name and password
  • {Game goes full-screen}

    [Loading bars]
  • Character screen with more news
  • [loading bars]
  • In-game

  • I've highlighted that what's different between the two. Please correct me if the original way of logging in was different than what I stated.

    Simply put, I think the launcher looks ugly and that it gives EVE Online an ugly face. The first thing I'm greeted by is a loading bar, after which I have to choose my character and *blam!* I'm in-game. I don't like it. There might be other reasons to use a launcher (I've seen more games make use of one), but the reason I can think of is that the launcher keeps the game up-to-date in a more efficient way than how it works with no launcher.

    Given that CCP really doesn't want to get rid of the launcher, I would propose the following start-up experience:
  • Double-click shortcut on desktop
  • Launcher with information like patch progress bar, a start button, BUT NO LOGIN FIELDS
  • {Game goes full-screen}
  • Fancy login screen with current expansion animations and ambient music where you put in your name and password
  • "Connecting" voice of Aura when you hit enter
  • [loading bars]
  • Character screen with news
  • [loading bars]
  • In-game

  • This way CCP keeps its launcher and I get my fancy login screen back. Also, when you would switch character, you would be returned to the "full screen" login screen and don't have to deal with the launcher like you have to do now. This would give me a more immersed experience, as switching characters keeps you in-game.

    Please let me know what you guys think!

    Kind regards,

    Well, since they released that launcher client lost some functionality: there is absolutely no way to restart client after connection has been lost for any reason even if you click "restart client" button (there is one) - it just closes client.
    Much anticipated "character select" function wasnt included with introduction of launcher and SSO system.
    Also it seems strange that we get to see news twice: in launcher and on character select screen. It would be better if they added expansion's ambient sound and background to character select screen instead of news tab ("connecting" when you enter game with character).

    Opinions are like assholes. Everybody got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks.

    You add some good points. The current launcher just doesn't seem well thought out. I'll be doing some research tomorrow on what the launcher ought to do or improve in the first place.
