Geez, at the Dead Kennedys in 1984 I was body slammed at least 7 feet twice and went home black and blue literally.

Ah, brings back good memories. Remember how it was called it 'slam dancing' back then? Slamming was actually a little rougher than moshing I think. Maybe because slam dancing was limited to only true punk events, with real punks around.

I got my knee kicked out during Sepultura and I still crawled my ass back in when Pantera came out. To this day I can't kneel for more than a few minutes without ending up in limp mode.

That was the start. I am sure that it evolved into chaos afterwards, if not then meh. Still more of a pit then the OP's pic. Also, I have returned home black and blue all over more times then I can recall.

Those that will enter a pit are, more often then not, a small fraction of the crowd at most shows, old school punk shows omitted, so outdoor festivals a rarely a good place for a solid pit imo as it spreads out too much. Metal/punk shows in smaller clubs is where it is at.

And yes most pits do follow a circular pattern, the point is not to intentionally hurt someone but to flail around aggressively and if you get roughed up it is not on purpose. If you want to hurt someone then step outside the pit and throw some punches. If not stay in the pit, throw punches, and get dealt with Twisted
