Am I doing it right?

So, for the last few weeks, I've been preparing for PVP.

Preparing meaning I've been training my skills.
While I've been training my skills, I've been staying in Hisec (Jita) and areas around it while the skills are training.

Should I be staying in Hisec?
I'm training for T2 hybrid turrets (small) for frigates.

After that I might do training for Attack Frigates.

Is that the right way to go?

yes

other people may prefer to do it differently, but that does not make you wrong.

That depends. When you're new to PVP and likely to die often regardless because you don't know what you're doing, would you rather lose ships that cost 750k per or 10M per?

In my opinion, no.

Reason being that frigates' primary function isn't throwing out damage; it's speeding out to intercept, web, and warp disrupt or warp scramble a target. Your buddy in a bigger ship with more/bigger guns then pops the target promptly. You'll see an increase in DPS from your frigate with T2 weapons, but it's not that big a hike, especially for the time it will take.

Getting into an Interceptor or Assault frigate, on the other hand, makes quite a bit of difference, particularly with survivability, and enhanced ability to perform it's core role.

Now, if you're looking to run destroyers, there's a little more reason to sink your time into gunnery. They manage to get DPS via more guns, and a maybe few extra low slots for damage enhancing modules.

But even then, I figure you're better off going for versatility. Cruisers are absolutely excellent for PVP, and battlecruisers. So T2 ships and guns in that realm should pay off pretty well.

I'm assuming you've already got T2 tank available. If not, then that's your priority. Survivability is probably the most important factor.

Finally, if you haven't done any PVP, then it's better to get started in cheap ships with cheap weapons. You'll still want a T2 tank, but everything else, it's probably not worth the money, nor time, until you have more experience and confidence in what you want to do.

Sure, if you stay in highsec you might see some pvp eventually. For instance, Cannibal Kane might see your post on this forum and decide to wardec your corp, then one-shot you with his Legion as you enter Jita.

You'll find pvp faster if you head on out to low or null. However, this being a sandbox game, you can do whatever you want whenever you want.

IMO, the only one who can decide if you are "doing it right" is you. As you can see by the replies different people will always have different ideas as to what is doing it right.

Set yourself a goal, achieve the goal. Once you have achieved the goal, evaluate your performance and either do it again and try to do better or move on to another goal.

As far as PVP goes, you could wait until you are maxed out on skills and still get killed every time until you learn how to fit your ship and use the correct tactics for the situation. So if PVP is your goal, then go do it, no need to wait as you will DIAF most of the time in the beginning anyway.

having more skills is a good start of course but you should not obsess over it. as has already been stated before, you want to fly as cheap as possible in the beginning and learn from the mistakes that led to losing your first few dozen ships. once you had a few fights where you almost won and you feel that you did everything right, you can start ramping up the price of your ship (your skills will likely be better by then anyway).

I should buy an Ishtar.

I created a low SP alt which I put into RvB where I'm learning combat, get used to it all and have a good time. In the mean time I'm training up more and more skills and make money in high sec till at some point (which for me will be within 7 days now) I'll stop using the alt and start doing PVP myself.

Everyone does things differently and what works for one may not work for another so follow the path that you like best.

PvP is best learned from experienced players. So yes. In my opinion you are doing it wrong as you haven't joined a corporation that can learn you the player skills of pvp. Character skills matter little if you none of the strategy.

Do it right, join an experienced pvp corp willing to accept new players.

+1 Cos, this is an MMO, and it becomes a better and better game the more you embrace that. It's also relentlessly complicated and even the devs commentating on AT XI had to double check their facts sometimes. Trying to go that road alone is a recipe for failure and frustration.
Make friends, even if they are as terrible as you, you'll have fun more fun learning together than wandering space alone. Chances are they won't be as terrible as you, and you'll learn something every single time you fleet up. I've been at this game for 3+ years and still learn with every undock. (I'm still terrible at Eve Online, come to think of it...........)

Remember that PvP in Eve isn't about never losing, it's about not always losing. You will die often no matter how good you are or how many SP you rack up. The whole point of being immortal is that death is merely a set back, but too many players take losses personally. Having friends and a cause to fight for gives PvP scope and makes losing ships serve more of a purpose than to pad someone's killboard.

I promote piracy as a career for any budding PvP'er. It's just the 'bad guy' version of RvB and FW small gang combat. Other than the very occasional ransom, it plays the same in practice. Pirates favor small hulls that any newb can skill up for very fast, and you're more effective in PvP in a ship you can fly WELL as opposed to simply the largest thing you can undock.

Stop caring right now about internet spaceships and you'll love PvP. After awhile you'll barely bother renaming them much less lament their individual loss. Make friends and you'll have someone to laugh with over particularly stupid losses. It's just a game, and even losing should still be fun.

While you're waiting for skills you could spam duel requests to every frig you see?

Or you could just haul a dozen t1 fit frigs out to low sec and set your clone to a low sec station like a man and just get to it. T2 guns will not make much of a difference right off the bat anyway. Just get out there and start losing now.
