ship number plates?

just a noob with a thought but what if every ship had a kind of numberplate that dropped when the ship was destroyed? the plate would have the ship owners name, ships name and ship class. i know corpses drop after pod kills then why not this after ship kills? a nice way to track kills and a nice little bonus if you dont pod kill the guy?

thoughts everyone?

You mean kind of like a kill mail?

I remember a few years back someone asked about "serial numbers" for ships, such that they have a unique identifier.

What purpose this could serve, I don't know. Perhaps for historical value, like "Hey, this shuttle was owned by Chribba" or something like that.

Anyway, in that thread, I remember seeing some Eve devs saying how they wanted to implement such an idea in the past.

I think this was in 2010. Lots of rum has washed through my memory since.

There has not been mention of something like this in that much time.

that would be AWESOME! you could see who made the ship, what their corp was and past owners? wonder why they never did such a great idea! :D (i know that sounds like sarcasm but its actually not)

It didn't happen because they would have to redo the entire item database from scratch and introduce massive inefficiencies in the process (and it would make players' lives more complicated as well).

That kind of specifics would require every item to be a singleton, and that would mean you could no longer create stacks, for instance. Every time you wanted to move 1500 whatevers from one place to the next, the database would have to do a move query 1500 times, rather than once for that single stack.

Something like this was proposed before, but the issue with it is that repackaged items cannot be uniquely identified in the game. So there is no way for a unique id number to follow a ship around.

As far as a "ship corpse" item; that is basically the same thing as a killmail, but with less information.

I like the way people think anything associated with WoW is automatically bad. Personally I'd love to be a panda.

No.

No dogtags for you.

Be happy with killmail or go back to Battlefield.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

If you do it for ships, you might as well do it for everything, since having two vastly different item management systems would be a mess. Then again, it would be very bad for just ships anyway since you want to be able to handle those in bulk, and it isn't worth removing that and crippling the db performance for such an irrelevant (no-actual-gameplay-)benefit as tracking ownership.
