By all means this years bracket, double elimination setup is alot better than past years group/point malarky, now every match is do or die (sort of) and we don't have (altho they where entertaining) things like thrown matches or space bushido. However, with no offense to CCP's Dolan, Rise and Fozzie, I want less static CCP'ers in the studio. For me the matches where secondary entertainment, what I really enjoyed was 5 PLAYER commentators, CCP Soundwave and a mix of CCP employees. It was the players turn to be seen on Eve TV and leave a mark greater than what I can see done at for example Fan Fest. It was great when players from big alliances, to the solo or small gang people could chat with CCP devs and GMs about upcomming features, discuss faults and achievements of the game. Where the matches where commentated on 99% in the booth during and then if nothing extra ordinary happend, we got to hear about CCP Veritas upcomming Brain in a box, Hear how Zastrow almost drowned with CCP Punktaris? (cant spell her name).

Please keep the double elimination and ship ban system, but give back the tournament to the players and let us see and hear from more CCP faces than the same four, I wont disagree that Fozzie, Rise and Dolan are good on camera and know the game, but please.

You could have trotted out CCP Fozzie for a few studio segments to tell us about the upcomming changes to warfare/mind links, command ships and active tanks. Rise could have chatted with the player guests about medium long range guns and hauler changes, dolan could have sported a new setup of facial hair to bet on a match! (Sorry Dolan, dunno what you do at CCP really).

They usually do the Devs talking about new things in the final weekend, specifically the final day, as the remaining teams need time between matches.

Pretty sure some of the main reasons for hiring Fozzie/Rise/Dolan is so they could double as commentators.

There is a small dilemma with that though, it's very easy for Devs to become out of touch with tournament meta, what certain setups are doing. Then there's a dilemma with player commentators coming from tournament teams who are unwilling to share tactics or good teams. So it's impartiality vs current and more relevant tourney knowledge.

Fozzie knows his stuff, Rise is a bit behind on tourney meta but knows his mechanics, Dolan has done a lot of work to improve his knowledge in recent tourneys.

You do know that CCP has to pay for 2 round trip plane tickets to iceland as well as a hotel for ~6 nights per player commentator that gets invited, right?

I would much rather they do it like they have this year and save the money for smaller tournaments like a second New Eden Open

Actually, they put Brent and I up in an apartment belonging to a friend of ours and paid his rent for two weeks instead of a hotel (he moved back with family for the time being)--a financially smarter idea since we've been here since the Thursday before the tournament and don't leave until the Tuesday after, meaning 12 nights!

I love the comentating of Brent. By far he is the most knowledgeable person in regars to tournament. The way he sees and analyzes the match is just great.

/agree

My only compliant is the sale pitch every...or almost every match.

Yeah, I get that you're trying to get more subs and this is a way to do it. But, I've never watched any tourney for other games, and in the middle of matches.......SALES PITCH!

Alot of cool things were missed during matches when this was going on.

It just seems unprofessional.

For next year I'd suggest during matches, commentators focus on the matches and CCP gets creative with their advertising. Explain everything through advertising, there is some really good and funny ones that the players come up with for recruitment!

No complaints about the commentators, and I'll be happy if shadoo, Brent and Bachawhatever come next year. However I doubt putting up 5 people for 2 weeks is such a huge cost for a multinational company, and it is a huge boon for the CCP <-> player relationship.

But I stand by my first remarks, I liked the tournament more, aka i didn't tab out when it was a studio part in earlier tournaments. It was the best part of the tournament, to see these devs that you never see, talking about their work, what they've done, how they got into Eve etc. And also great to see a selection of players from various lots of Eve life.

Also I miss the fact there was actually questions taken from the forum, that interaction seems to have also dropped off completely.

By all means congradulations to Fozzie, Rise and Dolan (now hiring shadoo, brent and bachawhatever?) but if you rewatch old tournament studio sessions, there was a whole other dynamic, with Dev guests comming and going, Zastrow and Shadoo's banter/teasing was alot of fun. But now it was 3 coworkers (+ soundwave), two guys who've casted the SCL for awhile together and poor Shadoo whom seems to have lost his expressive eyebrows, botox?

I can't be the only one who found this tournament lacking in the studio sections but greatly improved with the double elimination format.

There was basically nothing to talk about left. This year the tournament was after summer expansion, so there was nothing new coming up any time soon. Both Rise and Fozzie talked briefly about the work they did and will do for the point release. Also CCP just had finished company holidays - no new content to talk about before their dev cycle even started.

Totally agree with OP. Let's have more failures like Brent and a screaming Shadoo and less deeply insightful commentary from people like CCP Rise and CCP Fozzie.
