Got a math problem for someone smarter than myself:

Character at sec status -9.9997

Current pod sec hit is about -6.5%

how many pods would it take to get from -9.9997 to -10.0000

20m isk for a worked out solution

You have to kill babies to get -10 flat.

I think there's a minimum sec status hit that lets you get to -10.
I'd guess 2 or 3 more pods. Could be wrong though, I've never gone -10.

are you asking what it takes to get to 10 flat or merely to get a specific number of nines (eve stores a lot more than five decimal points for your sec status)

However, you'll never really get to a true -10, as the size of the increment will exceed the limit of a floating point variable before the number of decimal places in the sec status exceeds the limit of a floating point variable.

Mathematically, using %'s you can never get to 0.

But for all intents and purposes as well as practicality, the standard is to wait until a certain point that allows you to go "Yep, it's pretty much -10."

The math twist on the "man walks into a bar..." joke explains this to the common layman (the OP), it goes like this:

"Infinitely many mathematicians walk into a bar. The first says, "I'll have a beer." The second says, "I'll have half a beer." The third says, "I'll have a quarter of a beer." The barman pulls out just two beers. The mathematicians are all like, "That's all you're giving us? How drunk do you expect us to get on that?" The bartender says, "Come on guys. Know your limits.""

"Know your limits." is a reference to a mathematical procedure in situations like this.

So, literally, you will never hit true -10 sec status. Practically, it's whatever arbitrary number CCP decided on to avoid the following:

-9.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999....forever

You don't actually have to kill pods, you only need to aggress them. So if you go somewhere with a good number of pods flying about, you can use an ECM burst.

This is the best worked out but it cant be right.. i have podded 9 pods and not even a 0.0001 that's a third of your total amount and it should get progressively harder

Keep at it. There's no mathematical reason that you should be sticking at 9.9997 that I can see. Keep going, it's for Science!!!

How many pods did it take for 9.9996 to 9.9997?
