Linux or Windows XP -- Spare Hardware Build

I'm looking to re-use some old hardware for a rig I can leave at work to play during my lunch break etc. Here are the specs I'm looking at.

Core2Duo 2.6ghz
4 gigs ram
Nvidia GTX 460 768MB

I've never tried to run Eve on Linux and haven't tinkered with wine in years. However I am competent in Linux(I've run it on a desktop before, I admin several debian servers at work, etc.)

Since I'm trying to do this in as low budget as possible for the OS I'm looking at either Linux or Windows XP.

How do you think the performance would be with said hardware and Linux? As good as or better than Windows XP? Is it a pain in general to get Eve up and running on Linux and keep it running?

It will run faster on XP than on Linux. But as you can see from the other top threads in this forum - hint: browse the first ten or so of them - the success rate for using EVE on linux is really good nowadays.

Your hardware setup is approximately the same as mine (slightly faster cores, slightly slower gfx card), and I've been in huge battles without problems.

Check the other threads - it's worth it.
