Ship specialization for PvP?

Hello everyone,

First of all, this isn't a question on developing skills (EVEMon can do that for me). It is rather about the search for a suitable ship type for me... It is hard to find what I want, because a general description of a ship type in a guide doesn't really show if I would have fun playing it or not...

I've read in some guides that it is essential to specialize your character as soon as possible for a certain ship type. I was wondering what is in high demand in most corporations (who play PvP)?

My long term goal is to specialize in PvP. However, when looking at some guides, I'm clueless what to choose... For example, Logistics ships sound appealing, but what are the pro's and cons?

And are there other ship types for 'supporting duties'? Or perhaps there is no demand for such specialty and I should focus on something else for playing PvP?

I know this post is rather (or very) vague, so in short: what are the ship types most sought for by corporations for PvP?

Thank you!

If you want to become a logibro, roam around with some other bros in frigates and be the inquisitor class ship that gives reps, or any other racial logi frigate. Cheap to start out with and get the ropes.

I am not a pvp guy so to speak .. but ..

there are too many ships used in pvp to answer the question.

people use frigs, advanced frigs, cruisers, heavy assault cruisers, recons, logistics, battlescruisers, battleships, strategic cruisers, carriers, dreads, titans, cov ops, and some people even use industrial ships for a variety of sneaky clever reasons.

heck some strang blobs of people even use the starter ships for giggles.

so there is no answer to your question.

it would even be hard to nail down what type of pvp you are going to be doing .. which can in some way dictate the ship type(s).

if you want play pvp going forward then i would try to join a corp that does pvp and doesnt mind training new players. hopefuly someone can offer up some names.

get with a corp, and they will a) help you sort it all out b) probably tell you what they want you to fly now and what they want you to work towards next.

usually new players start off using frigates to tackle enemy ships. Frigate + speed + webifier + warp scrambler + litle bit of dps. Without this role in a fleet the enemy will just warp off if face to face with their impending doom.

If logistics interests you then you should by all means follow that direction .. fleets are always looking for good logi pilots, but it usually takes a while to get skilled up for that role, even just using Tech 1 cruisers with logistical bonuses.

History is the study of change.

In general, when people talk about specializing in PVP, they generally mean in a race/weapon/tank type. So, Caldari gunboats, or Gallente droneboats. The benefit here being that you can get your skills up higher, faster, than if you were to try to train up everything equally. There are some role-specific skills though - logi, for example, doesn't need much in the way of weapon skills, but needs RR skills and capacitor skills are more important

Are far as supporting options - Logi and EWAR are the two main choices here. Ewar varies by race, with the most versatile ewar probably being Caldari ECM as it's always useful. There's also tracking disruptors (Amarr), sensor damps (Gallente), and target painters (Minmatar, but these don't really count as ewar).

Also, in case it isn't imminently obvious (as it certainly isn't implied by the name) - logistics ships are remote repairing ships. They sit ~60km out from the fight and repair allies during the fight.

As far as which is in highest demand...It depends entirely on the group. In general I'd say logistics are a core component of a lot of gangs, at least in the FW area, but you could easily get by with anything.

I tend to agree. Logi is probably the most in demand from newer players as its easier to train for that than a BS as far as getting things out of it. Only reason a PvP would not take a logi in, would be you spent time training for a Guardian and they are a shield tank fleet. However, you can easily cross train.

Stick with frig tackle until YOU know what you want to do, or you join a corp and they tell you want they need.

I personally, like Logi and or flying around in tanky cruisers or lazer boats. Meaning i trained mainly Amarr ships. Like the others said drones are Gallente boats etc.

♥'s and Glomps for everyone...well almost everyone.

Bubblers are always in demand as :

a) its a fairly intensive (and boring after a while) role;

b) you're the most likely to die if things go wrong.

Frankly I wouldn't bother trying to "specialise" until you've done a bit of PvP, experience is always more desirable than skills.

Thanks for all the advice! At least now I've got a sense of direction.

I'll try some stuff in the coming weeks and hopefully I'll get a grasp of the things I like (and don't like). Perhaps I'll search for a newbie friendly corporation and go from there.

You could do a lot worse than take a look at Gizznitt's corp - they run PvP classes and have done for 6 years or so. Go on one of those and see how it goes - somer.blink sponsors pilots who can't afford the fees so if you can afford three frigates then give it a try.
