EVE central prices not accurate?

I was looking at the EVE Central (http://eve-central.com) prices and they seem completely divorced from reality. Why is this?

I do not use eve central, but I believe that the information at the site depends on users uploading it. The site does not get information directly from eve. Some items and regions (e.g Forge) may have fairly accurate information, whereas others may be off.

Any colour you like.

Samroski is right - as you can see on the startpage of Eve Central:

Actually the prices are quite good generally speaking.

The less traveled regions are not updated as frequently, so get dated, but then again
they are less traveled so still pretty useful.

eve-central has made me so much ISK it's hard to actually calculate.

For instance if you have something you want to sell, find some station with a decent amount
of buy orders in a price range and chances are you will probably get that. Pretty handy.

Yeah, unless your looking at the most obscure item in game, its going to be a pretty recent snapshot for Jita/Forge. Anything that is traded at all frequently will be at least somewhat up to date in highsec regions containing trade hubs. Out of the way empire regions will be accurate on widely traded stuff, usually to within a day or so. Once you get out to null, it becomes very hit or miss on everything.

I saw a LOT of spurious prices. I went there yesterday and it said that somebody was buying Hydrogen Batteries in Gergiken or something for $10 million each. I was already going nearby so I headed in that direction, but as soon as I got into the region I could see no sign of this mythical $10 million each order for Hydrogen Batteries. Further investigation showed there to be many other such false orders. For example, EVE Central showed lots of falsely high Hydrogen Battery prices all over Essence, Verge Vendor etc, none of which was real.

Think about it. An unusually high buy order is going to be jumped on pretty quickly by someone looking to make a profit, just as you were trying to do. You aren't playing the game alone.

There are even sites that attempt to identify such opportunities, so if you can buy from Jita, and sell to a buy order elsewhere in highsec at a significant profit, the opportunity will not last long.

There is a certain amount of manipulation to the data however. People looking to sell something in Jita will sometimes manipulate the market or directly manipulate the data uploaded to make it appear as if more profit can be made so their items will sell quicker and for better prices.

Someone buying Hydrogen Batteries for 10M? If it's too good to be true...

In general, Eve-Central is pretty good, but you do need to sanity check it and be aware that it isn't necessarily data directly pulled from the game and could be manipulated. Also, genuinely good deals may not last long. So by the time you get there, the order could have already been filled. It's a good site, but just not as reliable as being in the region and checking the market in-game.

And also keep in mind that if there even was an order like that in the first place in-game (a buy order that's 10,000+ times higher than a typical buy order for that item), chances are very good that it was part of a margin-trading scam anyway.
