Which skills should i begin training immediately? I have just finished my first tutorial mission and from what i understand i should just train skills while i am doing the tutorial.

Could anyone list the most important skills that the average EVE player should have? I have not chosen a career yet.

Thanks in advance.

As a new player (assuming you want to do combat) then there are a number of skills that are important to train, you will probably want to get these all to level 3, then start working on getting them to 4. Those are...

The primary skill for the ship you are flying
Fitting skills
capacitor skills
gunnery skills (or missile launcher skills if you go that route)
some drone skills (don't have to go crazy on these right away, but some really help)

This page may help you find the useful supporting skills: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Support_Skills

Even though it seems like it takes forever, get Engineering, Mechanics, Navigation, and Electronics all to V. Then get the core fitting skills to level IV right away.

A good guide is the Certificates.

Basically any skill that improves your ability to fit modules by 5% needs to be at 3 within 24 hours of starting and at 4 within a week. Engineering, Weapons Upgrades, Electronics, etc. Also capacitor skills.

Also get your racial weapon system for frigates/destroyers to 3 ASAP (e.g. if you are Gallente, Small Hybrid Turret), and your racial frigate, destroyer and (once you can afford to lose a cruiser, they cost ~15m cheaply fitted) your racial cruiser.

Then get your core racial tanking skills (armor for Gallente/Amarr, otherwise shields) to 3 and soon 4.

No matter what you end up doing in EVE, these skills will be useful to you.

After that, decide what type of ship you want to fly - slow, ponderous and tough (battlecruiser/battleship) or fast, agile and fragile (frig/cruiser) and work on skills needed to fit an all tech 2 ship of that type. Personally I love the Vexor, and so have Gallente Cruiser 5, all skills needed to fit tech 2 medium blasters, almost every drone skill of note (the Vexor uses drones primarily and medium hybrids as a second weapon system), decent active armor tanking skills, and lots of other relevant skills to fit tech 2 webs and the like.

Finally once you've done that, look into specialized ships that you will only fly when you need to do a specific job, and train into them. For me, I fly the Catalyst when I want a throwaway DPS ship that I'm happy to lose (for example, for illegal highsec attacks on miners), the Enyo when I want speed and agility, the Ishtar when I want battleship-level damage output from an agile ship, and the Phobos when I'm hunting someone using Warp Core Stabilizers. I'm also training into the Astarte at the moment for fleet bonuses.

Tippia has a good general skill plan that may work for you.

The skills you need depends on what you want to do in EvE.

Most want to pewpewpew and will get ship related skills to do so, but if you're a trader and crafter, ship/fighter skills are secondary to building/research skills (otherwise, it'll take you 3+ years to train).

Essential Skills to Train (no weapon or defense skills, as that's specialization):

Electronics 5
Engineering 5
Mechanics 5
Science 5
Navigation 5
Warp Drive Operation 5

Energy Systems Operation 5
Energy Management 5 (worth the 14 day training - you'll hurt dearly with CPU fitting issues until this and Weapons Upgrades are trained).
Energy Grid Upgrades 4+
Electronics Upgrades 4+ (for co-processors; and required for Covert Ops and Recon ships).

Gunnery 2 (then insert Weapons Upgrades).
Weapons Upgrades 5 (biggest CPU weapon energy saver)
Advanced Weapon Upgrades 4+ (biggest powergrid weapon energy saver)

Jury Rigging 4+ (level 4 for T2 rigs)
Hull Upgrades 4+
Thermodynamics 3+

Targeting 5
Long Range Targeting 5
Signature Analysis 5
Multitasking 1+

Drones 5
Scout Drone Operation 5 (for T2 drones)
Combat Drone Operation 5 (5% damage bonus for scout and medium drones)
Electronic Warfare 4+ (need this to unlock Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing)
Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing (for 3k more drone range per skill level and to use ECM drones).
Drone Interfacing 3+ (20% damage bonus per level).
Drone Sharpshooting 3+
Drone Durability 3+

Survey (need level 3 for Salvaging and Archaeology)
Salvage 4+
Cybernetics 3+ (Implants)
Infomorph Psychology (Jump clones)

Adding that I also consider a small investment in trading skills essential. You don't need to go far - Retail 3, Accounting 3, Broker Relations 3, Contracting 2, Marketing 3 and Daytrading 3 with all of their prerequisites will serve you very well.

If you find yourself trading more, you should then consider Retail 5, Wholesale 3-4, Accounting 4, Broker Relations 4 and Marketing and Daytrading to 4 as well. But that's a moderate degree of specialisation, not something to do lightly early on.

important skills are going to change by career

pvp -- weapon & ship fitting skills
mining - harvesting & refining skills
etc etc

check certificates
work towards [core competency: standard]
it should cover most professions as a utility skillset

it will give you a short term training goal whilst you continue to decide what you want to do

The question as to what skills one should learn is really hard to answer in my opinion.

For one you will almost never run out of skills .. i have over 80m Skillpoints .. 266 skills .. 90 or so of them level 5 and i am still completely swamped with skills i "need" to train.

So it is a mater of priorities .. what do you want to do next .. and how can you get it .

For many moduals you only need lv1 to use the item .. but as a rule of thumb lv 3 is good and lv 4 is smart.

For some ships level 3 is all you need ..

To make isk, or advance your choices in eve .. getting the bare minimum to get started is more important than getting things up to a "smart" level.

Sometimes lv 5 is really worth the extra time .. but i would say for new players than leave the lv 5 learning till later on.

Things i think are important .. aside from ship skills ..

Engineering.
Elec tronics
Mechanics
Naviagation

these 4 skills are used with every ship and are core skills.

Following these skills are specific skills in each of their groups .. for slightly more advanced uses.

An easy way to see what skills are basic and which are slightly more advanced .. advanced and stupidly advanced is price.

If its cheap .. 50k or less range .. then these are all the basic ones, likely core prerequisites for more advanced, quick to train to lv3 and likely worth your while to purchase. Obviously if you dont plan on using drones, or doing missions then dont worry about the cheap drone / social skills.

Unlike more games the sheer open ended-ness of eve skills is daunting to the new player -- there is so much choice and no way to know whats needed, whats nice to have and whats not worth it.

Alot of it comes from the player making a choice as to what they want to do .. which in turn drives what ship they will need to use to do that part of the game, and the fitting of said ship.

Currently that is what I am doing .. I have decided it is time i learn to fly a campital ship capable of jumping about. I asked around of decided on the Thanatos - from there i looked at basic and specific Thanatos set ups and the moduals i would need .. record all the skills i was deficient in, and then came up with a training plan myself (many people use OOG tools).

Part of the pleasure in EvE is comming up with your own goals, working towards them and the at some point achieving them .. and part and parcel with that is skills. Some people need to do it "right" and for that there are a lot of guides out there .. others like myself are happy to train what i want when i want without worrying about the right and wrong way to do it.

History is the study of change.

Tippia has a good general skill plan that may work for you.

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."

I've been playing for about two months now and saw this guy's guide the other day. Gonna support the guy who already posted it and say it's the way to go. I've been working on training all the skills he suggests.

After that? Well, it all depends on what type of ships you want to pilot because those skills are going to support you whatever you do.
