Is this still a viable way to earn isk? Can I do it effectively on a relatively cheap and disposable ship (not interested in pvping...), and if so what do you recommend?

It is very viable if you have a good safe null system, but the only way you will find that is being part of a null alliance. If your plan is to just fly in, hope to not get killed by gate camps and then ratt until someone kills you, my guess is that your profit margin will be about -100%

Rat in a PVP fitted ship. When the reds come into system get safe. When they catch you, kill them or go down fighting. BC is your friend but most Cruisers will get the job done.

If not interested in PVP, then stay out of null and/or stay docked up. Just because your not interested in it doesn't mean it won't find you. Embrace it and the game will be much more fun.

While it is not very efficient, it is certainly viable to use an AF to rat, like Ruban said, use a PVP fit to rat, then when targets of opportunity come along, blow them up. Using an AF will make it easy to hide from those that you can not blow up.

Stealth Bombers with fits built around maximizing torpedo performance work well. Sniper fit Tier 3 bc's such as the Tornado with 1400's also make good 'disposable' ratting ships.

I pretty much afk rat in a domi. they are by far the best suited ship for running combat sites now.

I earn on average 20mil per tick. and with the mjd you are close to invulnerable.

Obviously you need to keep a bit of an eye on your local and have either a outpost or preferably a pos you can get to if/when hostiles enter the system.

The other thing i'd say is stay away from the obvious sites they will check first. i.e if there is 1 haven in system, do the forsaken hub instead. this will buy you time to get safe.

One can certainly still make money ratting in null sec. That being said.. a few important points:

1. If you enter null sec everyone there who is not blue to your alliance or corporation is going to try to kill you.

2. Many null sec entry points are guarded

3. Whether you are fit for pvp or not fit for pvp folks who find you ratting will likely kill you. You will be tanking the rats and them at the same time (at least at the beginning). Having a point on your ship will not save you. Nor will it discourage your new enemy.

4. If you join a null sec alliance with the intent of doing pve and no pvp you will soon find yourself ot of that null sec alliance. Null sec sov holders typically only want folks willing to defend their space. NPC dwellers are typically there just for pvp. In either case you will not be popular.

5. If you are going into null sec totally alone and without corp or alliance standings your best bet would be a cloaky nullified ship like a tengu. Your dps will suck but you can usually escape gate camps and break in and out of null sec at will. If you get caught in a belt or anom ratting of course by some roamer you will still have difficulty escaping. Get used to warping to a safe any time you see anyone in local and cloak up.

I spent a bit of time in Syndicate & although I was practically skill-less I found that belt ratting (not efficiently mind you) in an incursus was more than viable. It seemed like good money at the time but I was quite the noob. To be honest, I subsist now on about the same budget. Your choice of ships is wide open. So long as you don't take a helios or itty you'll be just fine.

If by ratting you mean anoms & combat sites then I imagine you'll want something with a bit more punch but really man.. they are little red crosses...it doesn't take much.

I too used to roam Syndicate belts in a Rifter with T1 guns. That was not efficient at all given the time I had to spend to take down battleships but lots of fun nonetheless.

If you're not too concerned about profitability I would also recommend a MWD, PvP-fit assault frigate. Choose one with high base resistances against expected rat damage (Gallente/Caldari ASes against Serpentis/Guristas, Minmatar ASes against Bloods/Sanshas, etc...).
