Yep. And then back to a Slasher when you realise that missions are not what makes this game shine.

They're still one of the better sources of income for low SP players I think

If you must mission,

Armor rifter
Cyclone
Maelstrom
Mach/Vagur

Up as you get the t2 weapons and tank

If the missile skills are high, the Fleet Issue Typhoon is a beast. Been flying 4's in one for a year now and only got blown up once...and that was due to the half a bottle of scotch I was drinking at the time...

Can you give an estimate of what "improved skills" means?

With improved skills I mean great navigation / guns / shield / cap skills.

Lot's of time have passed since I did missions.
The progression of my old main was:
Rifter -> Rupture -> Cyclone -> Maelstrom -> Vargur

At the time it was not possible to use MWD inside gates, so I never used ACs in the Maelstrom.
Like Caitlyn Tufy said, Maelstrom is a brick, MWD will hurt the cap, but since you can use MWD inside gates now, you can fit a full gank AC/Maelstrom and I can see it work in a lot of missions (maybe not all). It seems lot's of people have been using without problems, maybe some of them can post their experiences. I'm not sure how it's working now with the TE nerfs.

Cyclone is a missile ship now so it would be a very odd progression in a turret lineup if done today for anyone thinking about it.

I must admit I haven't done any missions with projectiles since the TE nerf, but I used to run with a Republic Fleet Afterburner on my Maelstrom and tanked some of the damage with my speed (speed on a brick ship, yeah I know but it does make a good difference). The RF version uses less cap and has better speed bonus than the T2 by a lot, and doesn't cost all that much.

Not sure how the tank would do if you went for a MWD as there's only so much gank you can put into a Maelstrom, but I don't doubt that it can be done. Thankfully you don't need cap for your guns so it doesn't affect your damage in any way.

You can get Heavy T2 missiles and all of the support skills in about the same timeframe you can train up large guns. Plus missiles cross race. The reason the cyclone is a better mission ship is the tank bonus, not that level 3s are terribly threatening to a cane, but the new hurricane is a pain to fit, and range restricted

The Mael is a no brainer, total brick tank (and speed) and while you pimp out your tank on the mael you just move the mods to whatever shiney you decide to replace it with.

I think I spent about 550 mil total on my Machariel because I already had a deadspace tank, and I sold the T2 rigged Mael for 450-500.

Well for those who care about updates, I think the newbie is entranced by Lokis now and wants to go for that -_-

I wash my hands of the whole affair

Hehe, it's the usual learning curve. Bigger is better! More expensive is better! Must mission more! And then you realise that just as much fun can be had in cheaper hulls.

It's perfectly adequate for level 3s. I have mine fit with 720mm arties and it's got around a 35km engagement range before falloff starts really hurting. Against angels i can even switch to barrage and be even further out.

Tell me again how you manage to use Barrage with Artillery?
