Wreck & Can Abandanment Change

The current mechanic with cans and wrecks is that ownership is retained until either they are harvested or they expire and are removed from the game. There is a penalty for looting a can or wreck owned by another player, but there is no penalty for salvaging another persons wreck.

I have noticed a trend for many players to leave un-looted wrecks and cans behind containing things they do not want, but they almost never abandon them however. If another player loots these they then get flagged for taking something that the owner never wanted in the first place.

I suggest a simple change. Upon leaving the grid, in which a players has owned wrecks and cans, those wrecks and cans become abandoned (turn blue). The owner should have the option to choose not to abandon, but this should have to be a choice and action made by the player. Basically the opposite as it is now.

This still allows baiting and can flipping for those who currently make the conscience choice engage in such activities but removes make those wrecks and cans, who's owners just did not bother to abandon them, fair game. I realize that this abandonment mechanic currently only applies to wrecks but it could also be expanded to cans.

Suddenly jetcan mining is impossible, ninja salvaging is undetectable and insanely profitable, and loot on gates is gone before you can get back to pick it up.

To clarify what I think Ash is talking about: If you wish to salvage your loot or pickup your cans, you must opt-in instead of having to opt-out if you don't want them. A button that says "I want to salvage all my wrecks" and another that says "I want to pick up my cans" must be pressed before you leave their grid every time (resets when you land on their grid again).

No, it's my property until I decide otherwise, the present mechanics are fine, go work for your own stuff.

Well if you let your property float about in space its not yours very long then, is it? Blink
Now you could opt-in when you want to salvage the wrecks and pick up the cans (so perhaps higher punishments for stealing it from you when you have opted in), AND get lower rig costs because more stuff would be salvaged.

If someone steals it I can kill them, I shouldn't have to declare whether I want it or not, all wrecks and cans have my name on them, you can look me up and find out all about me, what more do you want? You know its mine, just leave it alone or become a criminal and risk the consequence.

Middle ground option:

A toggle in the options menu to automatically abandon cans on warp, off by default.

i have waited at such spots for just under an hour... and no one returns to get them

you can abandon wrecks out of the system they are in? as i said i wait to see if anyone returns for them and 9x out of 10 they do not.

should be a BIG button because honestly i dont think they remember this option and go on to the next mission.

imho ONCE the mission is handed in the wrecks should turn BLUE... hand in the mission should = abandon wrecks

Leaving wrecks not abandoned is just a way to get a free aggress and a free kill (high sec anyway)

and now that Scanning is "mainstream" anyone can do it....so there are tons of scanners now and tons of free kills

and what of the mission macroers? i message and eve mail to ask if they wouldnt mind if i take the loot and 2 out of 100+ i have asked reply with sure go ahead....the others are either macros, cant speak english or just dont want to answer in hope of a highsec free kill....or just dont care but will not answer.

so then... Turn in Mission = Blue wrecks... want yer wrecks? dont turn in mission. problem solved.

also wrecks BLUE by handed in missions SHOULD imho be able to be Scanprobed and warped to....or possibly have a beacon spawned at location to be able to scan down the beacon and warp to that

but once someone hands in a mission they go back in a salvage boat to loot it all why should some nubbin be able to salvage and loot someone elses stuff just because they don't have an alt to do it for them? personallt i think this whole abandoning wrecks is more than enough already and the very most they should do is remove the whole mechanic from the game and just have a free for all on anyone eho takes from a wreck the don't own

I think after a certain amount of time that any cans left behind should become Purple where after so many loots you would be able to be attacked and podded.

I used to run group level 4 missions, when soon this you would leave wrecks from sites until there were about 6 missions worth of wrecks out then send one noctis to loot and salvage all the wrecks.

If you don't follow the rules, neither will I.

ye true enough

my argument in this thread is the ones who dont come back at all really,... anyone else have at it at those who loot the yellows.

This is a bad idea.

If a mission has gates in it you bookmark each wreck pocket as you go and then just warp directly to each pocket to clean up, if you don't turn in the mission people who salvage then have to slowboat and use each gate again to clean up their wrecks or risk them going blue?

The game mechanic should favour the owner of the wrecks but not restrict others... hey guess what, that's how it currently works.

If people don't want to abandon their wrecks bad luck.

I don't mind people stealing my stuff it can be fun sometimes, other than that people can just ask, 9 times out of 10 I say yes and blue them all or do a deal with the salvager for a commission. That's why the present mechanic is better as it allows this type of positive interaction.

its fine how it is, no need for change.

If the owner chooses, he can flag the cans free for all. But until he does that, then they are his.

Don't really care if he chooses not to come back to his cans. That's your risk if you want to steal from them.

Not broken and doesn't need a fix. What about the whole doing a mission or site, switching into your salvaging ship to go quickly salvage then switch again to do more sites? Will lazy players that only want to salvage without doing any actual fighting just sneak in to a site while you are in a later room and steal all your salvage without your knowledge or a chance to exact revenge? This only seems like a reasonable change if you are tired of facing the consequences of being a thief.

People should be able to tractor yellow cans and wrecks of rats at the risk of suspect flag though.
