I recommend putting a bookmark in the can labelled "can holder". Then you don't have to worry about ore stacking on the one piece.

There is no real rules around asteroid belts or mining but there is a lot of "unwritten" rules going around.

I will try and list the few i remember.

If someone else is mining in the belt (this is for systems that is not that populated) you find another belt and mine that.

If someone else is mining and you notice a lot of rat wrecks around them dont just salvage them,be polite and ask if its ok.

If you have to mine the same belt as someone else go to the other side of the belt.

If you get can flipped warn people in local that a can flipper is around.

More or less the rules are just around being polite to other players, and miners. If you mine right next to someone else they will think you are trying to push them out of the belt,or just attempting to be annoying. If your in a frig and ninja mining they will wonder if you are looking to can flip them.

Also skip on the whole saying this is 'MY' belt. Most miners wont do this and it will make you look bad if you do and if your a miner you will want to stay friendly with your locals.
For secure cans and so on.. Its ok to use them but some people will find it rather nanoying if you anchor 50 in the same belt kind of thing.

Hope this can help you Smile

Good advice.

It's terrible advice.

Mine whatever the hell you want wherever you want (just be prepared for the consequences).

Don't EVER can-mine. It's like putting a big "**** with me" sign on your back. I blew up an Osprey that was can-mining the other day, didn't lose my gank Thrasher, and made off with some sweet T2 loot (might resurrect my mining Domi if I get enough loot...)

If you MUST can-mine, don't bother renaming the cans, it just makes it even more obvious that you are can-mining on d-scan. There's a notepad in the EVE client you can use to keep track of the time when you dropped it.

If you MUST can-mine, have a hauler sitting on top of it and leave a single unit of ore in the can to keep it "alive".

If you get can-flipped, it was your own damn fault for can-mining. Telling local just points out that you were an idiot.

If you get can-flipped, it was your own damn fault; you should train Anchoring to I and get a couple of GSCs.

If someone leaves a bunch of wrecks lying around salvage them if you want to; it's p obvious they didn't want them. Just don't take the loot unless you're ready for the consequences.

Lastly, while politeness is generally a good thing, competition, even in mining, is the meat and bread of this game.

Talk about bad advice....

By all means can mine. Can mining is more efficient and generally safer for the solo player. Your typical miner puts cargo expanders and equivalent rigs on his ship which makes him very susceptible to suiciding -- he then goes and mines in a high traffic area with a whole bunch of other folk, which of course makes him the natural target of a suicider.

If you can mine you can actually tank your hulk/retriever, and thus be relatively safe against your general run of the mill suicider. But what about those pesky can flippers? Easy - to safely can mine -- you must do two things -- 1) mine in a system that is off the main trade routes; 2) ignore folk that want can flip you.

If you are in an out of the way system -- you will find that you are rarely can flipped (for that matter you will be rarely suicided) --- if you ignore the flipper, they will get bored and move along. Thus, by going to an out of the way system you will only very rarely lose a can, instead of your whole ship.

Now there are folk that will tell you that by tanking your ship you reduce its mining efficiency, and that if you are a dedicated miner you can make enough isk to counter the occasional suicide run. Personally, I doubt it. But so what. By properly tanking your ship -- you get to mine that most precious of commodities -- the tears of failed suiciders. Nothing better then when you see that km showing the hulk blowing up a tempest.
