Question to high-sec mission runners and miners about friendship.

I would like to say, however, that if this thread appeals to you and you're not comfortable discussing it openly on the forum, feel free to PM me or convo me in game so that we can discuss it in private. I'm always very eager to help those who feel a little lost and need a gentle nudge in the right direction Blink

agree, CCP needs to fix loneliness on eve. they need to add dogs on the nex store.

I cant think of how many suicidal eve players there were when CCP Punky announced she had given birth to a baby that was not theres.

People only talk to you in game for one of two reasons:
1) They are trying to scam you.
2) They are a spy.

I have many friends on this game.

I can freely talk with them about anything, including my emotional disarray.

It's not hard to find friendly faces in EVE that you can trust, you don't even need to log, there are several of them on the forum, some are helpful enough to double my isk and share their wealth with me.

I am convinced by none of this.

In New Eden, trust is earned: it is not granted merely on the grounds that someone asks for it. All the more so if what is at stake is not ISK or in-game resources, but a RL player's emotional state. No one here knows who is hiding behind the avatar; not his/her intentions, his/her age, his/her actual competence in dealing with other people's emotional problems, or even his/her … gender. (Riot Girl's female avatar is aesthetically very successful; this should already be ringing all sorts of warning bells in the heads of our 96% male player base … but I bet it isn't.) Asking for confidences, but offering none in return, seems to me less like a strategy for making friends than an attempt to establish oneself in a position of power.

"Enduring", "restrained" and "ample" as designations for starship components are foreign to the genre of high-tech science fiction and don’t belong in Eve Online. (And as for “scoped” …)

I am one of the first to admit that behind this facade does not sit an oppurtunistic rogue, in real life I am nowhere near the Robin Hood the game allows me to be. I find enough emotional exhaustion in real life, work and responsibilities, in the populism of todays politics and the neverending, senseless wars. It's an oddity that I find relaxation and enjoyment in something that comes so close to it, in terms of complex relationships between individuals and groups, and the ingame identities they manifest themselves with. Perhaps the key to that is that none of it is real. Untill you get on voice comms with people. Then the game suddenly changes.

Suddenly it's not just about internet spaceships anymore. It's about people. That guy that so loyally supplies your corp with minerals, or your best spy, do you really wish to know of their personal distress, the terrible issues people struggle with in real life, or do you just want to blow things up together, and have fun trying to get away from all that for a couple of hours? I can understand both viewpoints. Trust has nothing to do with this. I will hear your story and I will feel for you, and that has nothing to do whether or not you have the keys to the batcave.

We recruited a couple of new guys which ended up in one guy killing his IRL nephew without CONCORD intervention because he loaned 50m for a mining ship and lost it on Somer or something. It was hilarious, so to be honest I'll take the highs and lows as they come and should I ever slip up and lose the keys to the Batcave to some spai when 420... there's always Faction Warfare!
