Prosthetic tongues giving refugees a taste of freedom

A Gallente medical charity, working in Republic space, has reported a huge increase in the numbers of prosthetic tongues fitted to needy refugees in the war-torn regions of Minmatar space.

These refugees, including many from the Ammatar Mandate, had their tongues mutilated, following a mystic ritual called the Voluval, in which young Minmatar adults undergo a test, rumoured to be a Jovian invention, and are assigned a mark, similar to a birthmark, which supposedly describes their destiny. Evil marks were subject to a variety of punishments, one of which was having the tongue cut out.

With the recent Minmatar incursions into Amarr space, including the famous raids on Mekhios, Kor-Azor Prime, and other important worlds, and the rescue of Starkmanir and Nefantar tribespeople from Mandate space, the prohibitions on some marks have been lifted, and no longer are unfortunate people rendered tongueless.

Not all people are happy with this development:
"Times change, I suppose. I used to cut their tongues out, now I put them back" said one Sebiestor surgeon.
"This one girl, after she got her prosthetic tongue, the first thing she said, was that she wanted to declare vendetta on Malaetu Shakor! How ungrateful can a person be?" said a Brutor militiaman.

One thing is certain. With their new prosthetic tongues, these previously sidelined people now have a voice in Minmatar politics!

I was going to say another pun, but I seem to have forgotten the wording. If I could just remember... it's on the tip of my tongue...

But in all seriousness, what's with Mr. Ixiris's terrible glasses? Did his latest clone's ocular implants malfunction?

Why that specific punishment?

Is there a voluval associated with being deceitful or an oathbreaker? Or is it a general punishment used against anyone who's kicked out of the community?

Whatever the case, it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Only half punning. One of my slaves had her tongue removed by the slavers that took her, and the experience was clearly traumatising. Even after the recent surgery to give her a new one and reconnect her vocal chords, she still prefers sign language, poor thing.
