Planetary Interaction Colonies, are they automated?

Or are they staffed with regular citizens?

if the latter, what measures are taken to ensure their safety and wellbeing on say, a Storm, or Lava planet for example?

or is automation/human staffing based on the type of planet?

am I employing people when I set up a colony, or am I just putting some Drones down to harvest me some ISK?

Pretty sure it's all automated. There was a story about it published once.

They are. As are the custom offices.

PI installation descriptions explicitly and implicitly refer to staff within them.

From what the description says, I think they have minimal human crew, mostly to ensure that the drones who actually do all the work function correctly. I, however, like to pretend my character did away with all the drones.

I assume it will depend on who is running the installation. Amarr will want to go for cheap labour over expensive automation. Gallente are to lazy to work and have enough tech to be able to fully automatize, the caldari will most likely do the same for efficiency reasons. As for the minmatar :P They'll do it with a skeleton crew and no drones leaving the whole place a mess and falling apart.

Why people always assume everything is automated? Ever since EVE started its life, everyone is heading that direction. First, people were thinking we are all flying giant metal behemoths with thousand of little windows without a single person on board, without any crew. Then, when CCP revealed it's a nonsense, people finally started to slowly adapt themselfs to this view.

I personally can't stand imagination that everything or most of the things are automated in EVE. Hell, this game has already enormous immersion problems and I for sure don't want to suckle it down even more.

Imagination of live crew, support, live colonies, happy / grumpy shiny people -- and not just metal plates and drones -- are crucial elements for my immersion in this game.

And yes, colonies are not automated at all. It is clearly stated in the PI installation process, if anyone is in doubt Smile
