Whats the point of this gank?

Hey guys!

Before I start explaining my situation I want you guys to know that this is not a whining thread but a true attempt to understand the reasoning behind some ganks.

So, I outfitted my venture for some gas harvesting (without the actual gas harvesters) and was just moving my ship to another location in order to actually get those gas harvesters. I broke rule #1: I pressed autopilot. Sure enough i saw myself in a pod (which somehow reached my destination). The whole route was high sec which meant I was suicide ganked Pirate. Losing a venture was no biggie...if anything it made me more aware but the situation was comical to me (I mean, who would suicide gank a venture which barely had 3mill in fitting?). To be fair though, I was embarassed by losing a venture under these circumstances, I broke the rule, and I deserved that loss. However, I decided to find this guy and see how he works maybe even get back at him Lol. I saw exactly how he did his ganks (witnessed one actually when stalking him). Classic gank, nothing to it. He used a thrasher, warped to gate, locked a victim, volley -> kill, then Concord comes in and destroys him. His alt comes in, salvages and loots everything. His victim was a reaper this time.....i mean..cmon. Can anyone explain the logic behind killing a reaper (it makes less sense than killing a venture lol). Does the amount of fun you get killing a reaper or a venture outweighs the loss in standing + a thrasher? I just dont see it. Do pirates usually do that ? Wouldn't it be more fun killing a nice iteron mark V with good loot?
If its just for fun, then why would you even salvage the wrecks? Again, I understand if its a newly made character and for him any profit is good profit, but this was a 2010 char.

If I am missing some obvious benefit out of this, please point me in the right direction! Maybe I will start doing it as wellPirate.
Sorry for rambling a bit, the whole situation just baffles me really QuestionQuestionQuestion.

Do you know what was inside that reaper, have you looked for the killmail in eve-kill? Some people use those ships to move stuff Roll

And your venture? Maybe he was bored.

You and Eugene maybe right...somehow I did not think that people would actually carry expensive stuff in these low-end ships (I guess I can see the sense as in most pirates would ignore a stray reaper and wont bother even scanning him). Noob me. P
I am trying to look at the stuff that reaper might have carried but the killboard for that ganker is at 0 kills 15 losses (which is obviously wrong, since I saw him destroying ships.). Anyway, maybe the killboard did not update or something.

yes, this is exacly why in low, we try to kill everything even the pods, often it is barely worth 1 trit, but sometimes, behind the poor impairor, is a 2B full slave pod, or a bunch of plex / officier mods in the cargo....

Probably just for lols, although as people have said maybe for loot but I doubt he's cargo scanning.
I podded an AFK auto pilot, just because I could really. I doubt he went AFK pod flying again Twisted

It's a community service, just like the time I found some criminal sitting at zero on a highsec anom, criminal, in his pod.

I'm guessing he was tabbed out trying to figure out why smartbombing someone else's wrecks had gotten him concorded, but yeah.

It's a teaching moment. The loot and killmail is purely a tertiary benefit of our job cramming wisdom into the skulls of the unenlightened. Most important is the sense of well-being at helping those in need, and of course, the juicy payments of tears.

yeah, already did that a few time, and once, i saw a big bounty(not usual, cause let's face it, most of those are just scouts with no cargo no implants), and he was autopiloting AFK in low sec, in a shuttle, with a 2b+ pod.

One person in Jita suicide ganks pods all day.

He is sponsored by a player that owns 700 billion ISK worth of implants.

Consider the throwaway Thrashers a marketing expense, to increase demand, scarcity and prices for your implants.

There are a couple gankers that specialize in frigs and pods and they just do that all day. They don't particularly care if it's a good hit, although they're pleased when it is, but they just love the work.
