I know this has probably been asked before but I can't search the forums from here (enterprise network, it allows me on some of the *.eveonline.com domains but not all of them Sad ) so I'm going to have to ask again.

I've built a new gaming rig which for various reasons I can't use Windows on. I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I've already got Steam (Windows version) up and running with no issues through Wine playing games - GalCiv2, Serious Sam, etc.

If I add Eve through Steam and then download and install it does anyone know if it will work properly or if there are any tweaks I need to put in so it can work?

I know there's a thread up on installing Eve straight through Wine on Ubuntu 12.04 but if it does work with Steam I'd rather just use Steam to run it all my Windows games that it can so there is as little faffing about as possible until I'm a little more comfortable with Linux as a whole.

Are you using the Linux native Steam? My first question in that case would be: can Linux Steam even launch Wine programs?

No. I'm using Steam for Windows through Wine. There's about 12 games available on the Linux version of Steam and about 9 of those are made by Valve. It *should* work through the Windows version (because Wine is running the whole thing), I just wanted to check if anyone had already tried it?

I am not running Eve via steam, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Although, the issue I have with Windows-Steam and wine is, that I have to run all the Steam games from a single wine prefix with some of them requiring all sorts of different winetricks shenanigans and library overrides. This can break things and get very annoying. If stuff doesn't work as it should, I recommend making a fresh prefix just for Eve.

And that Steam is really un-necessary overhead in this case. As I know at least some of the Steam Network calls disappear in wine

I've been running it just fine in wine through steam so I can get my card drops but once I get those it's back to launching it normally.

Serious Sam BFE works great in native linux. I wouldn't run it through wine if I were you. I only play Eve and Civ V through wine and the rest of my games (Dota2, FTL, Awesomenauts, Kerbal Space Program) through Linux Steam
