Noob question re: ganking with a Thrasher

A... "friend" of mine is wondering if it would be possible to two-volley a Retriever with a Thrasher.

The thing is this friend received that Thrasher as part of the tutorial missions. He doesn't really need it and would like to dispose of it however simply selling it on the market seems kind of... meh. So he's interested in providing some much needed target practice for CONCORD by spreading some artillery love to some unsuspecting and in all likelihood complety innocent miner/hauler/whathaveyou.

The fit would be as such:

Highs: 6x 280mm Howitzer Artillery I, 1x 250mm Light Artilley Cannon I
Mids: 2x Sensor Booster I/Scan Res, 1x Warp Disruptor I
Lows: 2x Gyrostablizer I

Gun support skills are not so great. ROF according to game client is about 7.5 seconds; so I'm thinking in a 0.5 system he might be able to get off 2 volleys before Popo goes to work. Pulling CONCORD is out of the question.

So: is it possible to pop a Retriever with that setup or should he settle for a Venture? 2 Ventures? Or would it even be possible to melt down a Skiff/Mack/Hulk?

Thanks.

I would highly doubt 2 shotting it and with the response time and slow reload of arty cannons it would be close, perhaps with a t2 autocannon thrasher with hail, but again that would be pushing it. They are great for alpha damage on shields, though there is a reason the catalyst is the most used ship for ganking.

All level 5 skills overheating you are doing 200 odd DPS compared to a fully t1 cata doing 380 odd dps.

Having been on the receiving end of Thrasher ganks, it usually takes at least two arty-fit thrashers to take reliably down a barge. More, if it's properly tanked.

They can take up to 3, maybe 4, if properly tanked and with some rightly Orca boosts.

People don't give the retriever enough credit.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I'll settle for a Venture.

Solo ganking got more challenging with the barge buff. I now consider it a team activity. But most things are more fun as a couple.

Gank Cats can still solo - I've taken a few barges that way. You just have to be more selective now that the 700DPS Cat is history. Load a passive targetter and a ship scanner, and you can pick-n-choose on your own. I've only rarely had a potential target warp out once I've settled on who I'm going to murder. It's amazing, but the ones you can kill tend to the very ones who don't run. Roll

Thanks again for all the replies. Turns out it takes two volleys just to pop a Venture, at least with my friend's skillset. And you can churn out three volleys without pulling CONCORD first.

Ugh, stupid Android and the forums losing my posts.

Was going to say that 700 DPS catalysts are still possible. I have 675.6 DPS overheated at the moment and am missing Surgical Strike 5 (in training now) and Small Blaster Specialization 5 (don't intend ever to train this). Add in higher implants and you could push toward 800, although IMO high end implants are quite wasteful. Gankers do indeed lose pods to a wide variety of play errors and/or lag.

Instead of a worthless venture why not gank a t1 explo frig. They will likely have no tank and may drop tasty faction gear and/or bpc's from the cargo hold

OK, fair point - 700dps Cat is hard to get, not impossible. I personally fly a blank clone when ganking, which limits me quite a lot - Can still drop a non-boosted retriever or badly-tanked Mack pretty darn quickly though.

Don't fly blank. Use cheap implants. 3% small blaster damage is dirt cheap, as is 1% surgical strike. They add up.

Also push all gunnery support skills to 3. 5 takes a long time, but 3 takes only 3-3.5% as long as 5 and gives most of the benefits.

Most of my gunnery is at IV. A couple skills (core gunnery, small hybrid turrets, small arty and autocannon turrets) are at V (for the specialization - Gotta love them T2 guns for popping heavier targets)

Fair point about the hard-wires. I hadn't been particualry worried about skilling this one up - he was originally an un-used alt, only recently have I been skilling him up. I use hardwires on my main, but for some reason had a mantal block on those with this guy.

(BTW: Blank clone; Cat w/T2 small ion blasters; unheated; Void S == ~550 DPS on this alt)

Edit:
Currently skilling Gallente Frig V - Getting me an Enyo for lowsec ratting.
