About New Eden Currency

I haven't been able to find many lore articles that give descriptions of New Eden's various currencies. I did see the Caldari article, but that only pertains to Caldari currencies.

Hell, there isn't even a Lore Article in Evelopedia about ISK. Unless I'm just blind.

I know ISK is the currency we Capsuleers use, but what about the "normal" folks? I'm curious as to what Planetary Currencies there are among all the thousands of inhabited planets of New Eden, and how ISK exchanges back-and-forth with them.

I'm also curious as to the history of ISK in general, when did it come about, why was it created, who was behind it, etc.

any insights?

I mean, we don't pay our Crews and Factory Workers in ISK, so what do we pay them with?

Maybe we do pay them in ISK, only the costs are included in ship build costs, repair costs, etc. Don't forget that capsuleers are filthy rich and even the most broke capsuleer is actually rich enough to live a life effortlessly upon retirement on some nice planet. I mean we're so rich that ship maintenance costs and bills are so insignificantly small compared to other things that we do not even see them.

A piece of lore ( i do not remember which one) once stated that 100.000 isk is enough for a regular person to allow them to live the rest of their lives in luxury.

The lore article you are thinking of was an in-character piece written by a person on the support crew of an Alliance Tournament winning ship.

In the 'Rich Fictional Characters - Tell Forbes Magazine' thread there's been discussion on the value of ISK, most of us believe a day's typical wages are between 1 and 10 ISK, although one person presented contradictory evidence claiming 50-100 ISK.

Factory workers are paid in planetside currencies more suited to small transactions than ISK.

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

I saw that thread, and most of the people there are trying to translate ISK to the US Dollar, which isn't exactly what I was getting at. I'm more curious about the exchange of ISK to ingame Planetary Currency.

see this is where my curiosity kicks in.

what are these planetside currencies? does each planet have its own? is it standardized by Empire, or what?

I've been around a while, and I've never seen terribly good information on any specific planetside currency - there was a reference to "Amamake Credits" at some point, but no exchange rate was provided.

Actually, about the only time we are ever given planetside cash in the game is during the Sisters of EVE epic arc; at one point, you're asked to pay a ransom and given an item to do so with. I think the item is called "A lot of cash" or something, but it specifically states that it is valueless to you as a capsuleer. Whether this is because it isn't enough to make it worth a capsuleer's time, or because we are unable to exchange it into ISK (or another useful currency) is unclear.

Oddly enough, the currency that Esna is talking about, A Lot of Money, is actually US Currency. Cool

I figure that for want of a better way of representing it crew wages & death benefits are derived from the ship insurance costs. Station and groundside staff could be funded from transaction taxes as previously suggested. Also, maybe our IC accountants do some creative short term currency trading work with part of the character's balance to generate wages in local currency?

Given we are so dependant on these people I doubt we pay them poorly. Unless a character uses one of the less ethical means to motivate them such as the Vitoc method or TCMC's.

Cover Stories offers a tidbit about Matari currency...

Quote:
The man squinted at him and hesitated before answering, “For you, seven parts.” The man was asking for seven-tenths of a Uranium-Backed Quantum: an increasingly common currency that used quantum entanglement to link data tokens to the uranium depository that underpinned the represented value. Ordinarily, venturing a price in a currency such as UBQ would be an extreme discourtesy on the seller’s part as the use of electronic money was normally for the buyer to raise as a convenience to both parties. If the seller were to offer a price and force a buyer to admit they were incapable of trading in such currency it would be tantamount to an insult. Even offering a price in local currency or scrip would be regarded as somewhat rude without first going through a polite ritual of weighing up kudos and apologetically citing some formulaic reason for having to charge for the item at all.

Uranium seems to be the bedrock of the Matari currencies..

As Aurum means gold, it is a safe bet that a gold standard is also in place..

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.
