Lengthy topic is lengthy.
I'm an avid fanwriter as much as anybody else who does such. While I've been a long time fan of EVE (just as everybody else, too), I never really got involved with how CCP acquires their official writers - I'm guessing just by hiring.
Nevertheless, for the lowly ones such as I am, fanfictions are just mere stories from the fans.
But now here's something I just stumbled upon and I haven't found neither a thread about it nor did search reveal any threads.

Stuff to talk about to get a discussion started:
- What's your take on this "Kindle World"?
- Could we see a CCP variant (focusing more on the menacing Piratefan-AND-fiction that bends rather than following official canon/lore)?

(haven't seen a CCP version alike but I could be wrong)

Details about what is Kindle World:

This youtube commenter talks a bit about it.

So, sometime around May 2013, Amazon announced and launched it's "Kindle Worlds" portal.

To be brief with what it is about, here are some excerpts for any readers to figure what this is about:

Quote:
Kindle Worlds is a publisher service of the online retailer, Amazon.com, devoted to providing a commercial venue for fan fiction creations of specific licensed media properties. It was established on May 22, 2013,

The purpose of this service is create fan fiction stories of certain licensed media properties to be sold in the Kindle Store with terms including 35% of net sales for works of 10,000 words or more and 20% for short fiction ranging from 5000 to 10,000 words.

However, this arrangement includes restrictions on content, copyright violations, poor document formatting and/or using misleading titles

Current Licenses include:
The Foreworld Saga
Gossip Girl
Pretty Little Liars
John Rain
Silo Saga
Valiant Comics
The Vampire Diaries
Wayward Pines

Random commentary stuff

So, this may still have you saying WTF is this?

If I understood it correctly:
It is more about giving little fanwriters and their fanfictions a bit of royalty as well as a higher chance of success of seeing their ideas be implemented to the actual canon (as a rough example). Or simply a bit more of a way of getting some attention for the dedication as little devote missionaries of what we find awesome.

There is of course for instance the concern that original characters might litterlly be "assimiliated" (we're talking borg style), but let's look at one of the stated examples; "50 Shades of Gray" which was a fanfiction that was turned into a, well yeah, "successful" product. Of course, smex sells...

As said above, I'm not into how CCP interacts with writers, but I cannot recall much attention to fanfiction writers specifically other than rare contests. Not to forget that not everybody likes fanfictions as one will likely find them to be ridiculed for (or by) their respective content and thus are easy targets for trolling. This is not to say that CCP is not doing anything for its writer-fanbase, and I know there are several player-turned-CCPwriter people possibly reading this at this very moment.
Nevertheless, Kindle Worlds seems to be attempting a big step forward, regardless of risks, which is somewhat cool. Now KW is quite limiting in its features and the actual fanfiction writer of course really gets the shortest end of the stick (even if it is more than not having anything but fanfiction-net).
I don't recall other places in the web going this far with fanfictions. Of course there are always contests and other little events to present such (or unknown original fiction).

- More importantly here to say or even ask is if CCP could maybe do such in a similar, better fashion? Or even get involved with Amazon's Kindle World, though CCP could might as well do a version of their own?

I'm guess that's why we have the EVE lore chronicles in the first place, but just to draw some lines, this is more about fanfiction. The difference between official stories and fanfiction is that fanfiction usually bends rules. Then of course, there are the extreme ones where one would clearly call them crossovers; where you would see Jack Bauer, My Little Ponies and Luke Skywalker take on the evil Quafe producers trying to...
Crossovers might be over the top, but I think one can still do some light ones with EVE + Star Trek, etc.
This subject is not about getting fanfiction stuff published out big and fat, but more about the subject of getting a bit of that spotlight cone upon fanwriters.

Not to be using this thread as small outcry for some love but;
There is for instance the "Real EVE stories" portal which actually damn cool but unfortunately, it is just for REAL ingame experiences. Such for fanfiction would be cool - and I don't recall there being one.
When we post fan-stories, we are most of the time forced to either make trillions of posts as the character limit is quite low for stories or post a link to fanfiction net. Posting a link is simpler but the thread will just vanish over time without bumps.
Lastly, we all know that one cannot force the interests of readers. If the story sucks, is cheesy or whatever, it won't gain much interest - which may be common for fanfiction, and which is likely why most companies don't take fanfictions seriously.
However, there is always a gem floating somewhere in the mass of pebbles. Nope, not my stuff, but there are indeed stories that are quite big and awesome and should have more attention - or not?

Okay, that should be enough to get a discussion somewhat started. Or not :P.

Fanfiction is not for profit, or at least directly. It is entirely possible and there is a well known case of an author having issues showing ownership of their material for publishing due to fanfiction.

Star Trek books are basically fanfiction as they are non cannon, but published under liscence so are essentialy liscenced fanfics from a Canon that is virtually non existent anyway. No, best bet is to write, develop your talents publishing for free in your spare time and then build your own universe.

Easy enough to use fanfiction converter to convert a story into a.txt file for usage on a kindle too though.
