Went ratting in Low Sec a couple of days after I got my 1st Dessie, got killed soon afterwards, went back to low sec to rat again and a player actually chatted to me and gave me some good advice/direction.

The key is to get into a Player corp that will help you out as a new player, its the other players of EVE who have the knowledge of the game.

I had actually decided against joining any alliance for now, because I believed that'd make me more of a target. If that alliance is at war, or gets into a war, their enemies can shoot me without Concord intervention, right? Turns out, going it alone is not that great an idea either.. Roll

If you are bored with missions, you might find pvp more fun; in which case joining a corp which will teach you how to pvp - and therefore, how to survive and even to prosper in lowsec - might be the better option for you. Pvp corps based in low and null sec don't care about high sec wars.

This game is completely different once you leave high sec.

Also, a million skill points is nothing. I am shocked that you were able to get into a battleship with so few skill points. I am guessing you must have, like, no support skills for it? Don't look at it as being discouraging. Don't look at it as, "Oh, frigates are small so they are inferior and for noobs only" because this just isn't how it works at all.

In my own example, I (my character) started playing at the beginning of April. He is qualified to fly a Raven with all T2 support modules. However I have not bought one yet because, well, I don't need one and in fact, where I am living now (NPC nullsec) it would certainly get destroyed within a day or two of purchase. I am actually training for an assault frigate, which I will be able to fly with all T2 modules including guns. That will be a more useful ship for me, for where I am now in the game. Does this make any sense to you?

To get better missions you need to grind missions AND get your Social skills up. Get Social to IV and then Connections to at least III, other social skill can increase your payout and LP gain.

Once you get L2 missions grind them (and improve skills) until you get L3 missions.

L1's can be run in a Frigate, L2's in a Cruiser, L3's in a Battle Cruiser and L4's in a Battleships, read Eve Survival for the Mission guides, rinse and repeat. One you have a decent ship and some ISK run Incursions, its better ISK and has a useful social interaction side also i.e. you are not playing alone and you don't need to be in a Player Corp and thus subject to War Dec's etc.

Have you tried the SOE Mission Arc "Blood Stained Stars" yet?

On completion you get a nice standings boost for the faction of your choice, which should be enough to open up the L2 agents for that faction.

It does, I certainly don't plan to buy another RNI again immeidatly and then try not to get it shot out from under me and fail badly.. Blink

I fully realised I was taking a risk, I just didn't think it was -that- big a risk. I hadn't realised that at least low-sec was already way too dangerous.

The reason I want (and bought) an RNI was just, well, I have a thing for real life battleships and the RNI looks good, so I couldn't resist. As stated, I wasn't even really planning to fly it for more than one trip to collect equipment. Somehow I figured I'd be safer collecting a couple million worth of equipment in an RNI, than doing the same with my Corax or my Drake. I was planning to hold off from flying it more until I got trained properly. Unfortunately, things turned out badly for me and I lost the ship within a day of purchase.. But as long as I learn from it, it helps.

I'm mostly thinking of learning a few lessons that will help me right now, because the same thing could have happened to my Corax as well, even though that is a better fit. In fact, it would have happened even faster, as it has fewer hit points.

BTW, can other people see how valuable your cargo is?

Ships are tools, you fly them for a particular purpose. I know people who have been playing 5 or more years that only fly frigates because that's what they have the most fun in.

The fact is that big ships are boring. Most EVE players will learn that after 2 years.

No, I have not. How do I acquire those missions?

You fly to the Sisters of Eve station in the Arnon system and have a chat with Sister Alitura

There are also modules that scan the ship's fitting to see what modules it has fitted.

I thought so. Earlier I picked up valuable cargo, at least a couple of million worth and was immediately scanned to a duel. One reason why I took out the RNI to pick up over 37 million ISK worth of equipment.. I figured I stood a better chance..

Also good to know, so they might have know I was no match for them, easy pickings.. So my strategy of taking out the RNI to look bigger than I was, never mind the fact that it was pretty obvious from my profile that I was a noob..

You need 1.0 standing with the faction, corp or agent in question to access level 2 missions. Since you need to find a level 2 agent the agent standing isn't relevant here. Keep working for a corporation and after you get the standing to 1.0 go find a L2 agent. You can speed it up by training connections, which increases your standing with friendly npcs or social which increases the amount of rep you gain per mission. For the reference level 3 missions need 3.0 and level 4 5.0 standing.

The missions aren't that tough but as you've noticed some caution is a good thing to have. A kiting caracal with an afterburner and rapid light missiles should have easy time in most missions. If you haven't seen this already, take a look at the mission reports. It's an invaluable site for any mission runner. It helps you fit the correct modules on your ship and tells you the triggers that will spawn more npcs, resulting in less exploding in your part :)

Thanks, I think I'll do that. Although I think I'll need to look into my standings first. With at least one NPC faction my standings are already pretty bad..

That's not valuable...

You probably weren't scanned. There are people in the trade hubs that send dual requests to anyone they can. You can block them from sending dual requests, you can ignore them or you can block all dual requests.

You're highly unlikely to be suicide ganked (ie in highsec) for 37 million. Now, if you were talking 370 million....

Edit: Of course, since you were auto-piloting in lowsec it didn't matter what you were flying or how much was in your cargo. You were a target anyway.

Sisters don't care about faction standing and unless you're below -5 to one of the Empire factions (exceedingly unlikely this early), it won't prevent you from doing the Sisters mission arc.

I just meant, I don't want to get into trouble due to standings, I may need to fix that first..

BTW, thanks for everyone who replied so far, this is all helpful feedback. Maybe I should've asked for advice a bit earlier, but I didn't really know where to start.. Losing over 500 million ISK worth was at least a starting point.. Roll

Again, unless you are -5 or below to one of the Empire factions (exceedingly unlikely this early) you will have no trouble with anyone.

So much I could say to the original post, but I will keep it simple and say:

-You don't need to fly the ship, to retrieve fittings for the ship. If you bought something in lo-sec, fetch it in a venture or something disposable for god's sake.
-Don't autopilot EVER. ANYWHERE. EVER.

Don't give up, your enthusiasm is refreshing. You lost a RNI and you aren't even crying on the forums, you are asking questions. I think you have learned the most important lesson already.

Also, I am very surprised at the constructive criticism so far. Just when you think you know GD...

The more I read the forums over the years, the more I swear. To god. That the typos are intentional mistakes. Part o f the encryption.

I just checked and that is not the case, I thought it was worse actually, but it isn't.. Good..
