What are some of the ways to avoid gate camps (high sec)?

Broke EVE rule #1 today - flew and lost a ship that I couldn't afford to.

I was in high sec (1.0) just jumped through a gate still cloaked, thinking I was safe for 60 seconds I quickly went out of the room to grab a drink. Returning to the room (ship still cloaked) I find a gank of FW war-targets on overview. I was PvE fitted at the time intending to run a mission so I targeted another gate to warp to and escape. I guess he was expecting me, as soon as I hit the warp button (ship revealed) I was locked and scram'd before I could get away.

I understand there's the ship agility in play to align quicker versus his gank had possible sensor boost to lock me extra fast out of expectation. My question is, what are some ways for pilots to get out of that situation? Thanks!

Not much you can do in a situation like that apart from fight (not ideal) or don't shoot and burn back to the gate to jump back through leaving them unable to jump due to aggro timer. But you must not shoot if you do this other wise your aggro timer will prevent you from jumping.

Edit

However if they are a good gate camp they will have someone who doesn't shoot until the last second so if you do jump back they will follow and get you on the other side, all being said its unlikely you will survive a good well organised gate camp but maybe you should get a scout alt or at least a friend out of corp to scout for you this will negate the gate camp all together.

Hope this helps

The drink probably did you in, gave them more than enough time to anticipate. Also they most likely had a scout on the other side of the gate where you jumped in from (or was it a 1 or 2 gate system?)

if you are stuck in a gate camp, you have several options, but none of them is very promising:
- trying to warp as soon as possible may get you through if the gate campers are not paying attention. having a short align time helps a lot (when i travel through lowsec, i use a nanoed frigate and so far no gate camp was quick enough to catch me).
- try to wait out the jump cloak. if they have no scout on the other side, they may think that you were in a covops and warped away. also, they might jump another victim and give you time to escape.
- try to slowboat back to the gate. depending on the circumstances, you may be able to get to the gate and jump back through.
- use the cloak mwd trick, fit nanos and/or warp core stabilizers (d'uuuh).

I should buy an Ishtar.

It is a bit tedious, but think about swapping your PVE fit for a travel fit (stabs etc) if your destination system has a station.

Pretty much this.

If you think you can't fight and you can't warp away (because you didn't want to compromise your fit with warp core stabilizers) then your best option is to burn back to gate as fast as you can.

Be aware that your attacker can't jump through a stargate for 60 seconds after their last offensive action. You will be able to tell if they are still offensively attacking you if their target highlights are red ("red box'ed" as it is affectionately known). The same mechanic applies to you as well (so if you intend on jumping through, don't engage).

If you are facing multiple hostiles and one of them hasn't aggressed (you can tell because their targeting highlights will remain yellow) while the other one has, the most likely scenario is that he/she will try to jump through with you and "tackle you" (see: warp disrupt) on the other side.
In such a scenario... jump through anyways and then warp to any place as soon as you load the grid (preferably to a station). The idea is to take advantage of the loading delay of entering a new system and the possible distance between you and your attackers (because you both spawn randomly).

Failing that... burn back to the gate and repeat the same action. Either you will die or you will somehow escape.

if your in FW or the subject of a war-dec
don't afk undocked

high sec gate gamps are usually found on the auto-pilot routes between jita and the Amarr/Gallente hubs
avoiding them turns a 20 odd jump route into a 40-50+ route

[edit]
also .. using the auto-pilot whilst under a wardec isn't very advisable
even a rookie ship will be blown up
just because

That sucks man, I haven't had that happen to me yet, and I am hoping it doesn't.
