Been playing off and on for a few years now and recently re-subbed. I was training this pilot to fly the Tengu. As i'm googling/searching i'm seeing there's been a lot of changes and Tengu might not be in the shiny spot it used to be in. Im reading there have been lots of HML nerfs since I was gone? But that HAMs are now the way to go? I'm mostly looking to rat in 0.0 with a side of PvP. Thanks for any advise in advance.

ya it's fine. i returned from 1.5 years away and it worked the same as before, minus about 30km worth of HML range, which didn't matter a lick.

HAM with range rigs are the way to go now

I still think a Tengu with HML is preferable to HAM's it takes too long to get into range, and in that time you can be killing things.

The HML nerf was also a stealth buff to the tank if you used Fury missiles as you now no longer have a sig penalty which makes tanking even easier in a Tengu.

There are superior ships to the Tengu, I have maxed out missiles skills and pretty much maxed out skills for everything concerning a HML Tengu and I find a Typhoon Fleet Issue to be a superior ship in most missions and I don't even have T2 cruise or T2 sentries yet. It's not as forgiving as the Tengu, but it has selectable dmg type and puts out significantly more dmg.

I find 41km range HAM tengu the best atm. Nice fast lazy boat.

But RNI tops em all atm

Tengu is in a good place atm tbh.
For some reason people still want it nerfed to all hell but honestly it's not over powered at all anymore, it just looks like it due to caldari HACs and command ships being utter garbage.

Me and a corpie did a 5/10 and 6/10 DED in Blood Raider lowsec last night and barely dropped within 10% shield in RR Tengu's. We usually use them for Sleeper sites and they are T2 Omni-Tanked, didn't swap any mods out or anything.

They are still very good ;)

I can't stand hams on a tengu... the rate of fire is just insane, I had a rate of fire rig on mine and a 1.8 sec rof is just woah! without the rof rig it drops to 1.94 according to eft. even that seems insane. can have 3 volleys in space. nope nope nope!

maybe I just fly too many gunships where I don't have to worry about wasting volleys, or maybe the golem with 15km/s missiles where I don't have to count up to lock range.

looks like the hml tengu took a bit of a dps nerf but otherwise should be fine, or if you don't mind counting volleys rapidly the Ham tengu will work. personally I haven't used any of my tengus in a long while now (although I can fly nearly anything else with very near perfect skills).

That's true, unless you're very, very careful, you can waste a lot of volleys there. However, up close and personal, orbiting at minimum distance, it works fine. It's not the be-all-end-all that it used to be, though - there's better ships out there for just about any task now, Tengu's advantage is just that it can do it all adequately with a few subsystem / rig changes.

Personally I wouldn't use HAMs for mission running.

With decent Missile skills and T2 launchers you should be getting about:

Scourge Precision Heavy Missile: 40+ km
Scourge Fury Heavy Missile: 60+ km

If you want to go over 60km use Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missiles and you will reach 80+ km.
