I googled and also looked here for "API". All I could get from google was Application Programming Interface. I searched with these search terms: "Eve online, API", and "Eve online, wiki, API". All I got was "Application Programming Interface." See? I did search before asking...

I've seen posts here were people keep saying something like "I want to see your API before I trust you." or variations on that theme. What is "API" in EVE Online?

Go log on to eve online support. An api is a code that allows out of game programs to access and use information about your characters and account. It can be limited to your skills or set to show everything from your kills, your friends, and all your mails.

Hope that helped.
Don.

note that it's the most effective way to bully newbies into disclosing waaaay too much private information, often without their complete knowledge of what is happening. it's mostly used by recruitment bullies

If by "recruitment bully" you eman "anyone competent wanting to know the actual history and skill-capabilities of a potential recruit as well as past associates and relationships so as to prevent an altercation or security breach" then yes, they are bullies.

but everyone else in the world calls it common sense and intelligence.

Are you a recruiter? If you are, what would you consider fair and reasonable information to include in an API, and what other questions would you ask?

I realize that after what happened to S2N or Test, or whoever they were that humungous Alliance destroying Awoxing that occurred recently, that recruiters are probably extraordinarily nervous about who they're recruiting these days.... And recruits are probably getting killed as they report for duty. LOL

I bet you don't submit to background checks or credit checks in real life either do you, Mr. Paranoidsauce?

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

In real life, submitting information to apply for credit is reasonable. But for a game? How much info is too much? And how much is reasonable?

The issue is one of trust. Anyone can make an alt and claim to be a newbie to gain entrance to a target corporation. With an API, however, they can look through your wallet/mails/corp history/etc to search for little clues that will usually point to the character being someone's alt. No experienced corporation will/should let you in without an API check. That said, you can set an expiration date on your api, or take it down at any time if you feel that the corporation in question is misusing your API.

I have alts in corporations completely unlinked to my mains. Anyone that is looking to gain serious intel or do serious damage will not be stupid enough to have any traces of a link between their mains and their spies. There is quite literally no way to determine from my alts APIs that they have any link to me whatsoever and people involved in things like PL and S2N collapses will be the same. API keys do little to fight off long term spies. They simply stop Joe Average from getting in and robbing you blind, but then Joe Average shouldn't have access to anything damaging.
