UI: Grouping modules besides weapons

What is the reason that non-weapon modules cannot be grouped in the UI, in order to activate them all with the same hotkey?

I'm specifically thinking of non-damaging offensive modules like target painters, neuts, nosses, etc. but the same argument could probably be made for (uniformly scripted) tracking computers, sensor boosters and dampeners, and a few other defensive or utility modules as well.

Is there any chance this could be added? It would make some fits much easier to fly and I can't think of any particular balance problems it would cause.

The ONLY modules that should be exempt from this are tractors.

Besides that EVERY active module should be groupable.

tractors is somewhat understandable, because you can't activate multiple tractors on a single object anyways
Salvagers? I don't see why this should be avoided, I quite often use 2 or more salvagers on a single wreck. it would be handy to have, however that being said I personally wouldn't group them, however this should not preclude it from being possible.

Sure, there will always be situations where a pilot will choose not to group things for one reason or another -- that's already true with weapons. But the idea is that the game should allow pilots to make that choice for themselves, depending on what they're flying and how they intend to use it, rather than arbitrarily forcing us to keep most of our modules ungrouped for no apparent reason.

I can't find the thread, but one of the devs touched on this one before. It has to do with legacy code that requires that all grouped modules be identical. So even if they flagged modules a groupable, there are only a few that would benefit from such a change until the code is fixed.

an activate rack button/short cut would do the same job and probably get around the code problems

Yes, of course -- an "Arbalest Cruise Missile Launcher" can only be grouped with the same, and not with a "Limos Cruise Missile Launcher" because they have different firing speeds, so they do not behave identically. But I don't see why a "Target Painter I" couldn't be grouped with another "Target Painter I" (but not with a PWNAGE) -- it's the same principle. All identical modules ought to be groupable.

I like this idea, even it it is only identical mods that can be grouped.

I approve of this thread. Identical modules sounds perfectly reasonable - who mixes meta on anything anyway?
