Im in the process of un-carebearing myself, and I'm looking for some advice on a good starter ship. I can fly anything T2/T3 short of a Golem, and I'm pretty sure I can fit every T2 piece of equipment other than some ECM crap.

Whats a good solo ship to play around with while I look for and pick a pvp corp to join?

Whats a good way to go about practicing in low sec, other than just flying to the nearest lowsec system and shooting people?

Thanks!

Caldari have the best T1 Cruiser in the caracal.

Here is a fit- provided you have good cap. If you don't drop a nano for a PDS

Lows:
BCS II X2
Nano II X2

Meds:
10mn Experimental MWD I
Large shield extender II X3
Warp disruptor II

Highs
Rapid Light Missile launcher II X5

Rigs:
Anti-EM Screen
Anti-therm Screen
Field extender

If you have speed implants / links / or if you find that most of the ships you are flying are far slower than you- change up your lows slots. Drop the nanos, and grab a PDS and DCU

Set up a meta-fit Griffin with emphasis on ECM and DPS (note: it shouldn't cost more than 2 or 3 million ISK). Take it into low-sec and parooz through the asteriod belts (or FW plexes you find). Engage the first frigate or destroyer you see!!

Rinse and repeat.

When you start winning and/or losing by small margins, upgrade your setup to the next level (T2-fit Griffins, Kitsunes, and/or Destroyers).

If you are learning PvP, I suggest you stay OUT of Cruisers. They are expensive for someone just learning PvP.
Use this.

It's about 5-6 million ISK so it's good enough that you can kill good stuff, but cheap enough that you should be able to afford to lose a lot of them.

140DPS and 5150 EHP.
Orbit at 7-7.5k and kill.

[Kestrel, RocketRegular]
F85 Peripheral Damage System I
Ballistic Control System II

Medium Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator
Experimental 1MN Afterburner I

Rocket Launcher II, Nova Rage Rocket
Rocket Launcher II, Nova Rage Rocket
Rocket Launcher II, Nova Rage Rocket
Rocket Launcher II, Nova Rage Rocket

Small Warhead Calefaction Catalyst I
Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I
Small Core Defense Field Extender I

Yes. Provided you get permajams and with a scram/web, you can whittle anything down with 3 RLs and drones.

BLASPHEMY.
If you can not fly ECM then you are not worthy of flying any Caldari ships.

But to answer the question:
Forget T2 and shiny PvE Battleships.

The best Caldari ship by a long shot is the Hookbill.
Griffin is 2nd best.

Try flying a HAM Caracal for one month. Put a long point and web along and see how good you are kiting cruiser sized hulls capable of killing you. You will learn alot about your pvp skills and awareness in one month.

Best ships are falcons & onyx. That way, other groups will take you with them and then you can learn.

1. Anyone suggesting ECM ships, you're awful, go away.
2. By caldari do you mean missile boat? Because if not you can use hybrids.. If you can use hybrids you can use the incursus.. If you use the incursus you win at life.

I would suggest an incursus (No dual rep bullshit)

If thats not an option the merlin is alright. The kestrel can brawl pretty decently with rockets and the condor is pretty good at lml faggotry. You can also use the kestrel for this but its harder since its slow as balls.

kite condor is best ship to start learning pvp,

It is not always easy to fly but when you learn to fly it you have basic knowledge how to move on battlefield.

Do not fly a HAM caracal. HAMS are horrible, and the caracal is not a HAM boat.

Also to those recommending T2 or ECM boats, stop trolling this guy. Caracal is by far the best caldari small gang / solo / roaming ship with easy access.

Actually a HAM caracal can be quite nasty in FW space, a RLM Caracal shouldn't be written off either.

Honestly? If you don't want to be tracking disrupted to death just train missiles. If you're using turrets then use something that can dictate A LOT OF RANGE.

Kestrel

Condor

Cormorant (rail gun)

Corax

EDIT: Oh! In fact don't train for hybrids just cross train to Minmatar and you'll be better for it. Then you can fly; Thrasher and Talwar. Fly those 2 ships and there's nothing else you need to train for EVER.

I would be careful at training down minmitar. AC's are in a really bad place right now thanks to the TE nerf. Pulse lasers are far and away the most useful turret.

HAMs are fine. I know a guy in my corp who flies HAM caracals and beat up on people all day long.

Though, within FW space, RLM is probably preferred due to all the frigs/dessies roaming around

HAM Caracals are great. They are cheap, can project ~350-400 DPS out to 30km and with a small cap booster can nearly perma run the MWD.

The kestrel fit that Baron gave is great. I've died to things like that a lot and can attest that they are simple fun. The Incursus is awesome, and while I like the dual rep fit most (kill me now Garviel) the sinlge rep fit with other bells and whistles is nice.

The Merlin is still lots of fun to brawl with, but I feel that it is outclassed by many of its counterparts. The kestrel can project better, then Incursus can tank better, Condors, Atrons, and Executioners can kite it do death as well. In some niches it wines, but most other frigates outdo it.

The Condor is arguably the easiest ship to pvp in when light missile fit with dual TD. Simple activate all the things, keep at range at 20km and go make a sandwich. The fun way to fit them is with a 200mm plate, scram, web, and TD. It works like a rocket slasher.

Hookbill is evil and I hate fighting them because I'm bad and die to them. They're essentially a kestrel crossed with a condor then given faction stats. So very good at both brawling and kiting.

The Hawk is another great brawler and can wield an ungodly tank with 2 medium ASB's. if you like Merlin's then the blaster Harpy is a great choice. Big tank and big DPS. Or, if kiting is more your thing, the rail harpy is very strong.

Caldari has many great options for pvp at the moment, so just pick a few, and go blow stuff up. Joining a pirate corporation that loves in the FW zone will give you more fights than you could imagine.
