What kind of ship and modules for exploration?

I'm thinking of giving exploration a try and want to know what kind of ships and modules I need to skill up for. Obviously I'll need a scanning ship and probe launchers to scan out the exploration sites, but once I find them I'll need some more specific modules, right? There's hacking, and some other kind of thing that has a special module, and I could possibly also find hostile rats, right?

So how should I equip my ship to be able to handle all that at once? Doesn't seem possible...

And then if I want to venture out to low/null sec and do exploration there then I'll also need some pvp defense modules as well...

Cov Ops ships are ideal, especially if you want to get out of empire and have any chance and better loot. You'll need to skill for the Data and Relic Analyzers, as well the Cov Ops Cloak if you have not already dones so. (All this cloaky, covert ops stuff isn't important if you intend to stick to high sec.) For probe launchers you'll need to skill up Astrometrics as well the support skills, Acquisition, Pinpointing and Rangefinding. You needn't take them to V to be effective.

The skills for running the analyzers are also in the Science section of your character sheet: Archaeology and Hacking. You'll want to skill both as you'll find both relic and data sites depending on where you explore.

Which brings us to the question of rats. If you only follow those signals you find for relic/data sites you will not encounter any rats. You would only encounter combat situations if you scanned down and subsequently explored Combat sites. Obviously, you would not be doing this in an astrometrics t1 frig or Cov Ops frigate.

If you intend to explore in 0.0 you will need to skill up for that Cov Ops frigate in order to get past choke points going into and out of many hostile areas. Or, you can just do as I did and scan for wormholes wherever you find them until you get one that drops you out deep into null. You'll roam and explore until your cargo hold is full, then either sneak back to empire system-by-system or simply scan for more wormholes until you find one that drops you back into or near empire space.

(Since you're new to this I won't dampen your spirit by telling you I just spent the last two dozen game hours or so in nullsec doing exploration and making a mere pittance in ISK for my troubles.)
