Weird issue

This has me pretty confused. It's an issue that's persisted across 2 different operating system installations, 2 different keyboards, and 2 different mice, for about 8 months now.

Occasionally, when I'm on the web, the browser will randomly start zooming in and out every 2-3 seconds, in no specific pattern. Today, I bought BF3 on my PC, downloaded it, logged in, and played for a while. After about an hour, I started losing control of my character. I would more or less get stuck in place, with the image rapidly oscillating, and switching weapons, while attempting to stare at the ground near my feet. Occasionally in Counter Strike, my character rapidly changes weapons without my input. I have no control over my movement, all that I can do is quit, and hope it stops.

Pretty sure the browser and game issue are the same, as when I pressed some buttons on my keyboard to try to see if I had a stuck key, I hit the windows key, which tabbed me out to Chrome, which immediately went through it's strange zooming behaviour.

I'm assuming it's some driver conflict, but I can't find anything online, nor do I even know what to search for. I have no clue what to call this. I've tried almost all combinations of drivers installed/not installed. It keeps happening. Currently all drivers are installed, and updated to their newest forms.

Relevant system specs - Win 7 Pro x64, Microsoft X6 keyboard, Logitech G500 mouse. This install of 7 is brand new, I installed it about 5 hours ago.

If anyone has any idea whatsoever what the problem is, what to call it, or how to fix it, I'd really appreciate it.

You can try disabling Zoom and other Accessibility options in OS. It usually part of OS install that is designed to help handicapped and disabled persons. If you do regular OS install, without actually looking through check boxes, these utilities that are build into OS are usually installed automatically.

I also use a G500 mouse. Sometimes I accidently 'unlock' the scroll wheel so that it goes into smooth-scroll mode. In smooth-scroll mode, it's VERY sensitive--as in, just moving the entire mouse causes enough g-force on the wheel sensors to cause movement.

If not that, I'd check other G500 settings...'leaning' the scroll wheel left and right is also programmable and could be something you're doing in the "heat of battle", as well.

If that happened to me i'd assume my systems are compromised and someone is ******* with me, then reformat. Even if i'm wrong, a good reformat fixes just about everything.

I can say with about 99.999% certainty that there are no spyware of viruses on this machine. The newest OS install was about 5 hours old, after a complete reformat of my HDD. The only downloads were the Sony drivers I needed to make all the hardware work properly, Sophos AV, Spotify, and BF3, in that order. Other than those websites, I went to Facebook.

As for the smooth scroll, I'm very familiar with that one. I almost never touch the scroll wheel while playing shooters, but I do know how sensitive it is, and I know that the problem isn't with that.

I really don't know how to describe it, because I've never seen the issue anywhere else, or heard of it. It hasn't happened since I wrote my OP, but kept happening right before I wrote it. Windows did install about 50 updates, so I guess we'll see if that fixed it.

EDIT:
Just kidding... still happening. pressing ctrl-alt-del, tabbing to it, then back into the game seems to fix the issue, temporarily, anyway.

Invited any witch-doctors or voodoo-practicing people into your house lately? Your computer could be cursed!

Pretty sure no, though one may have gotten past my anti-voodoo defenses on halloween.

Those witch doctors are wily.

First: What keys make you switch weapons. Second: What keys control zoom (e.g. ctrl + '+' or '-'). Third: What keys (all of them) control your view in the games.

If the answer to all three of those questions is "something on the mouse" and one of them doesn't involve the keyboard, then you should probably RMA the mouse or get a new one. Same thing for the keyboard if the answer is reversed. Play with the mapping on your kb setting and mouse, I doubt its a driver issue (those are generally more problematic and constant), so its probably some sort of mechanical or electronic failure in the control devices.

It's called logitech = ****** for the most part.
I still use a g15, but it's a piece of junk really. The software for the key board just sux, it can never remember what profile to use, it will randomly switch profiles on me in the middle of a game (usually EVE), the backlit buttons stopped being lit up enough to read them after a year and the USB ports on the key board don't provide enough power to run anything off them.

Their mice aren't much better.

All right, I seem to have isolated it somewhat. Through some trial and error, I think I've isolated it down to something in my laptop's keyboard/mouse. The issue was occurring again today, and i unplugged both my external keyboard, and my mouse, and the problem kept happening. I was pretty sure it wasn't the actual hardware in my external mouse or keyboard, as I've changed both since the issue started happening. Pretty sure that this confirms it.

If it's a hardware issue with my actual laptop, that's really going to be a pain in the ass to fix. It's my only computer, and an a busy engineering student, I can't really send it off to Sony for them to fix, though it is under warranty...

Ah well. Guess I'll just deal with it for a while. And Barakkus, as for Logitech, I've actually been nothing but happy with everything I've bought from them. Plus the G500 is the only gaming mouse I've found that I like the feel of. It fits my hand, isn't massively bulky like the Microsoft ones, and doesn't feel like it's built from super cheap plastic like Razr does to me.
