Leftover high slots: Do you fill all of them?

I wanna start by saying I'm not talking from a rookie perspective. No, I'm not saying I fit 4 different levels of railguns to my ship, But let's say that since a good portion of Caldari ships are railgun platforms, and you have a standard fit(Railguns, resists, Damage Control etc.), but had leftover missile and high slots, would you fill those high slots up with missiles? I'm not saying that it would be a good idea in some cases such as Incursions, but just something I've been thinking about lately.

usually it's not worth it

for example on my drake you dont have much fitting room leftover and i just leave the 7th high empty

The use of utility highs depends entirely on what you're going to use it for

PVE is easy as balls so feel free to fit a damn mining laser for that.

PVP, prolly best off fitting a neut.. or an offlined salvager if that doesn't fit.

There are a few modules that can serve as a filler when one cannot put any more guns/launchers into the high-slots:

- Salvager
It lets one pick up wrecks. Especially when one sees a random ship wreck of a T2 ship in high-sec can this module turn every day into Christmas and by finding several millions if not tens of millions of ISKs of T2 salvage materials in the cargo bay.

- Small Remote Armor Repairer
To fondle a buddy's ship with a chance of being creepy. Do not do it unless it is necessary. It can repair damage on a drone, too.

- Drone Link Augementor
With the updated NPC AI are these not as popular as they used to be, but still makes for a useful high-slot filler.

- Cloak
...

- Core Probe Launcher
With Odyssey will this module be of more use than before.

- Auto Targeting System
+2 to targets!! My personal favourite.

Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling.

I'm aware of all that. I've been playing for awhile now.

Not sure that I agree with the "A good portion are rail platforms" part.
The ships I am aware of :
Rokh has 8 hardpoints for 8 guns. I fit 'em all. Blasters for PvP.
Ferox has 7 out of 8. I fit 220 autocannons on my Ferox though... and a Neut
Naga is 8 for 8
Moa is 5 for 5

I don't fly the little ships, but I would assume every extra bit of DPS is important in small hull fights.

I hate smartbombs. Mostly because my own drones are usually close by.
Ditto that for drone links.

Neuts or RR for PvP, NOS for PVE. I do try and fill the slots if I have grid to do so.

Auto targets take very very little space. Its the "Why not" module.

Don't forget the venerable Cyno... though then you need ozone too!

If you don't have anyone to light the cyno for: Neut > Salvager > Mixed weapons

The answer is yes.

Add a missile launcher if you can and don't have plans for something else that you prefer for the job being done. Shocked

Generally a drone link augmentor or auto targeter for additional locks if the fitting is tight. Vast majority of time my fits don't allow room for non bounused weapons if it's between a weapon or using it as an utility slot.

I would tend to see the "left over" high slot as a utility slot as opposed to putting a rocket or missile launcher in it.

depending on context you have various options. Normally I would choose a neut or a cyno.

NOS/Neut. If there's no fitting left, offline probe launcher (saved my butt in whs numerous times) and/or salvager.

Tractor beam is a good on the bigger, slower pve ships.

...also good for snatching their loot just before they get in range of it, the rage can be glorious.

For PvE, you go tractor/salvager (if one slot, go tractor) or Auto targeting.
Drone link augmenters are also good in long range ships, and remote shield/armor reps are good for sentry boats.

NOS is also an option for some niche loadouts, but with the changes in Odyssey they will become worthless for PvE.

For PvP, you go neut or NOS.

It depends on how I plan to use the ship...

I will often try to make the fitting space on any battlecruiser hull for a warfare link.
I find the targetting limit on most of the larger ships restrictive and an Auto-Targetter helps ease that problem.
Nos and Neuts, frequently, or RR if it's likely others will do the same.

I only tend to fit smartbombs as an intergral part of the fit - they're too dangerous (not least in terms of cap pressure) to fill spares...

But, particularly on small ships, spare highslots will remain empty - not through fitting restrictions but as a heatsink (and I've done the same on Marauders).

happens with amarr ships too, mostly the drone line, if you're doing PvE of course, the dragoon, arbitrator, prophecy and the like tend to have always a free high slot, because of their roles. the armageddon when not used for EWAR has 2 free high slots.

If you're not in highsec, you can still fit the cyno. When a fight goes poorly you can pop the cyno and hopefully scare the enemy off. Just be careful though, because you do get stuck for 10 minutes and there's a pretty good chance someone'll come along and pop you anyways.

Some will still be worried you're bait though, so it might just allow you to survive.
