I hope everyone who is celebrating Independence Day has a safe and happy holiday! Eat some good food with family and friends.

A recipe I am using today for the pork steaks.

Dry Spice Rub

3 tbsp Paprika
2 tbsp Brown Sugar
1 tbsp Sea Salt
1 tbsp Black Pepper

3/4 tsp Onion Powder
3/4 tsp Garlic Powder or Fresh Garlic finely minced
3/4 tsp Chili Powder
1/4 to 1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper

Coat your pork and rub it in, then put it in a bag in your refrigerator for 6-8 hours.
Heat your coals on one side of your pit, and when they are nice and hot place the steaks on the opposite side. Cook them for about 35 mins flipping once or twice. Then coat each side in a nice bbq sauce cooking for about another 10 mins at most. Coat each side at least twice in the sauce while cooking.
Take them off the grill and let them rest 5-10 mins. Serve and enjoy!

Also, You can cut up some potatoes, an onion, and mushrooms, coat in some olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well and place in a tin foil pouch you make. Coat it all in parmesan cheese and half a stick of butter sliced up and placed around. Then wrap the foil into a ball and place on the side of the grill with the coals for about 30 mins. It is delicious and you can cook it at the same time as meat and you dont have to pay attention to it.

Enjoy!

Confirming that the UK spends every 4th July plotting their revenge.

I've been asked in the past why the UK doesn't have an Independence Day, my usual reply is that we gave a load away to our former colonies, and then realised we didn't have enough stock for our own.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The Brits I would doubt would want that.

At the moment there's more movement for the English, Scots and the Welsh to split up from each other than to consider enlarging territories.

We've done the Empire; we've got some good things out of it and it's all safely tucked away in the past where it really belongs.

Some of us wouldn't mind the rebuilding of the Empire, arguably the arguments in favour of the Empires purpose have been subsumed by the United Nations, NATO, European Union and the Word Trade Organisation in most respects. With these in play, the reasons we built the Empire in the first place (free trade and access to natural resources with the perhaps misguided impulse to explore and civilise) are moot. We'd mush rather sit here on the top of the pile in those organisations than be running the whole thing.

Basically, if these organisations hadn't arisen after WW2 we still would have the Empire for the same reasons, everybody wins this way.

But yea, happy independence day, Big smile

Well, the Empire was being closed down during the Second World War.

Twice Churchill went over, cap in hand, for American assisance and was refused first time point blank and the second time refused unless Brtiain dismantled a lot of the Empire.

All very well saying it was for Free Trade, as long as it was free trade for us. America couldn't get a look in and so that was the major economic criteria for getting involved a second time around.

And then as parts of the Empire were dissolved other parts began to break up, for example, India into three distnct countries. Then when one broke free of India and then, as a matter of fact the Empire, then it was a matter of time for the rest to follow.

Now, what if Germany decided not press any further in Europe and withdrew from Poland (our major trading partner hence the reason for Britain to get involved) then things would have been different. Arguably the US wouldn't have got involved with Europe and if this were the case then Pearl Harbor would never have happened because the Japanese wouldn't have needed to get a steal on them.

Germany would have moved into France and would have most likely kept France as it was but putting it under politcal and economic control. France'scolonies in Africa would have changed hands to Germany, Italy would have kept Somalia and, perhaps, spared us the mess that it's in now and Germany would have most of East Africa and perhaps Britain would have kept her colonies.

So perhaps WW2 would have been shorter until, perhaps, someone decides to set fire to Africa.

And, yes, if reading this you think that the war was all about trade. It was.

Not specifically trade, but economics in general keeping in mind the Soviet Union was sitting to the east focusing on ideology and struggling with shortages more than international trade markets. I'm relatively certain that had the Empire wished to survive, it would have. It would have been a bloodbath, deploying nuclear devices on rebelling areas and descending into essentially a Nazi like policy with regards to the colonies (Mau Mau rebellion without as much care for the civilians). Pick a city in the British Raj, and prove you are a power to be feared and would Gandhi succeeded? Japan was more nationalistic and it fell to the Bomb.

The British Empire had it survived would be a monster no doubt equal in deeds to the Soviet Union, but it would still survive had it been denied free markets for its trade.
