What should I do in my Megathron?

So, I had the skills and the money for Battleships and their large hybrid weapons, but I'm now not sure what to do with it. I only have level 1 missions due to my spending so much time skill training and trading.

What should I do?

I hope to do PVE with it mainly.

ships in eve are tools for you to use to acomplish your goals, so a better question would be "what ship should i be looking at to do X?"

a pve megathron in about hiting targets ar range with rails wile using drones to fend off the smaller faster targets that get under your guns. keep in mind that while you may have the skills to fit the guns large weapons do a very poor job of tracking small targets so without gunnery support skills you may find missions rather frustrating

You fell into the common noob trap of "bigger is better" and "Just cause you can sit in it, doesn't mean you can fly it". Your megathron will be horrible in level 1 missions unless you fit it with small guns (which it has no bonuses to).

Consider getting a catalyst or algos to run level 1 missions and eventually level 2 and then move onto cruisers. You spent your money on something you cant effectively fly for a long time.

Outside lvl 4 missions I'd use something other then a battleship for PvE. Your entire angle on getting into ships is backwards. You don't just buy ships and then think for a use for them. The proper way is to think what you want to do and then see what ships are good for the activity. It makes me suspect, that your skills aren't really that good for flying battleships yet. Just having the skills for guns and the ship isn't good enough for larger ships. To make them worth it your support and drone skills have to be solid too or your performance isn't going to be all that great.

You really have 3 choices with the Megathron.

  1. Leave it in your hangar until you have access to level 4 missions
  2. Have it hilariously explode on you when (not if) it's killed by NPCs or other players
  3. Sell it to recoup some money and spend the resulting cash on a ship that you can actually use effectively

Progressing through the ship classes will give you the experience to be able to use your new toy properly at some time in the future. Having the skills to sit in a ship are one thing, having the experience to use it properly are an entirely different matter.

On that note, "Don't fly something you're not comfortable losing/ can't afford to replace" is probably one of the only universal truths in Eve.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Tip one, leave it in your hanger
Tip Two, buy a solid Cruiser and do Level 2 missions
Tip three, Buy a Battle Cruiser and do level 3 missions. In addition a BC will help you get a feel for flying a battleship, which tend to do everything slowly and suffer when stuff gets in 'under their guns'

The biggest mistake that many new players make, especially new players that have come from games like WOW/LotrO, is that they think that Bigger is better.

It's not, it's getting the right tool for the job. And let me tell you. You may be able to fly a Mega well, but once you can do level 4 missions, THAY WILL EAT YOU ALIVE!

Slow down, develope your skills appropriatly, then once you can do, level 4's you will be better prepared for them, and have a healthier wallet that will stand the loss of a BS or two, because even with just NPC's in missions, you will lose some until you get a real feel

The logical path to the Megathron would be to get comfortable with the Incursus frigate in level 1 missions, then get comfortable with the Thorax cruiser in level 2 missions, then get comfortable with the Brutix battlecruiser in level 3 missions, before trying things with the Megathron. And by "comfortable", I mean "able to do the appropriate level of mission in that ship without breaking a sweat".

And when you reach battleship-level PVE, you really, really need to have a bunch of secondary skills, most importantly drone skills, because battleship-caliber weapons are notoriously ineffective against high-speed, close-range light craft, which will scramble your warp drive, web you down to a crawl, and basically pin you down for heavier NPC ships to tear to pieces.

Oh, and most lower-level missions won't even allow battleships into the mission space in the first place...

I recently came back from a large hiatus so know your pain.

So, i've just got my megatrhon but i have spend the last 3 months in either my Harpy, Thorax or Ferox.

First things id do,

get social and connections to at least 3, this should allow you to skip level 1 missions.

then get either a T2 frigate or a Cruiser and start your level 2 missions, once your comfortable with them move on to 3 in a BC of choice I went Ferox cos i was rails.

Im only just on my lvl 4's and I have quite a few gunnery skills to back me up but still only roll at 439dps.

I did what you did, as soon as i could fly the BS at the minimum requirements, i took it for a spin, the first thing i did once i started the level 4 - ran away as i couldnt deal with the incoming damage or put out enough, my output was 230dps with 7 large prototype rails.

This game isnt a sprint, and you will learn alot about PVE espexially damage types as you go up through the missions the jump frmo 3 - 4 is quite large
