Skinnable UI?

This has to have been suggested before however as I'm leaving the game over a graphics issue despite that I really love this game, thought I'd bring it up!

Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to design graphics for the eve ui yourself, alter colours to your own preference, and set window positions via xml? Wouldn't it be even more awesome to have ui sets you could switch between for different tasks - science, exploration, trading, mining, missions, pvp? Save and load across characters or even accounts because it would be local to the client only?

Advantages:
Colourblind or photosensitive people would have equal functionality to the visually normal
Switch window layouts for different ingame tasks
Load up overview settings while docked instead of trying to set it up while in hostile space
Back up your ui preferences and transfer to a different computer

Disadvantages:
Programming time
???

If CCP isn't willing to open up the UI graphics and xml to everyone in that way, how about having a UI design contest? Approved redesigns get in the game and the designers win prizes and brag rights!

- CCP is trying to keep this in mind afaik
- Do you really need to? Most of these tasks are unrelated to each other and have separate windows anyway.
- /open_overview_settings to play with settings while docked
- There's this thread: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=246910&find=unread

There's also already a color edit function for the UI. Mine's black and red :D ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn4_RVKzODQ )

Good to know about /open_overview_settings I'll try that out next time.

Window layouts would be great for situations such as when you're docked and need to look at mat prices but need to access planetary view to see how much you've got, and inventory to see how much m3 your hauler can carry. If you move your trade/chat/inventory windows around to access the planetary management panels, or close them, you have to reopen them one at a time after exiting planetary management or move them back, with this idea you could just quickly switch to a planet layout then back to a trade layout with all your windows still intact in each layout.

That's just one example of where it would be nice to have it and streamline the process of doing whatever task you need to do.

Editing colours doesn't affect "redboxing" or flashy blinking target icons. Only editing graphics will do that. Which means skinning.

Uhm, you can change the colors and change opacity, plus you can link windows together into tabs or each window separated. Plus you can change the size, change font size.

And you CAN change overview settings while docked. Just assign your overview settings a hotkey.

What is this graphics issue that you are leaving the game over?

Nausea during jump?
Or green tint due to NVIDIA graphics drivers (can be fixed)?
Sth. else?

All your background and icon changes for overview/local is done in overview settings. Opacity and color for windows is done in the esc menu.

I can set a wartarget to black, flashy red, blinky pink/green/blue/orange/white whatever.

Same goes for suspect, fleet member, corp member, alliance member, pirate, etc.

All of it is possible, just need to check your overview settings =).

You can also change how your mouse over info is displayed in space. I have mine setup custom to show pilot name/corp, underneath that in a color (i use green) the ship hull name, and underneath that the alliance ticker.

All you need is to either look up the html/xml code, or look up online what the settings are and know how to edit a .xml file yourself to change to taste.

That's not even mentioning the # of tabs you can have for specific layouts and colors in title to accomplish a great many different set of combinations.

Want to make a wartarget flashy red background and a green flashy icon? done.

Want to make it so corp/alliance members who are suspect/pirate dont show up as suspect/pirate? easy.

That's all great, but want to make your S&I window not take up 1/4th the screen? Nope.
Want to remove the border around the windows, the header, or other buttons to increase screen real estate? Nope.
Want to make wreck windows just a giant Loot All button? Nope.

Basically, CCP tells you that the default UI that someone else created is the best way for EVE to be played, which is a ridiculous stance for a gaming company.

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

Cool. However I'm talking about the new way the locked targets disappear by blinking since Odyssey instead of just dropping off. There's no setting for that unless I can somehow edit the graphics.

Colourblind people would like the option to see magenta and cyan (for example) instead of "redboxing" and "yellowboxing" from targets in overview. There's currently nothing to change that.

Allowing eve users to have a fully skinned interface would change that.

People who are getting sick from the jump animation could drop a file into their custom skin to overwrite that. CCP could make changes more easily for everyone.

Again, if the ui were fully skinnable, graphics and all, I wouldn't be doing this with my inventory box in order to keep playing eve. Pretty funny eh?

- Set ship cargo to Alt+C and set inventory to Alt+I (and drop Alt+I from w/e it was before)
- Set the ship cargo into compact mode and make it smaller
- Toggle it open end closed with ease with Alt+C

Thank you will try that. Still just a workaround though, where if I could redo the graphics I could simply have it not blink and not have to do weird things with other boxes to block it. Smile
