You sound a lot like my autistic uncle.

Give this a spin maybe: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_ironing

Just make sure you have parent supervision of any activities that employ use of sharp objects or extreme temperatures.

Thanks, started with JKA Karate as a child, did Okinawa Karate-do, Jujitsu, then moved on to Thai Kick-boxing, Kenjitsu and Rei-Thai-Chi. I find they put me in the "right" frame of mind when I do 30 minutes practice or kata in the mornings. Blink

yeah, but can you fight? i mean, really fight for your life should the situation call for it? and i dont mean just physically.

training so many styles usually amounts to nothing. i would recommend dedicating to a philosophy, for a long time. what you describe is a sign of being in too many places without a purpose. it sounds to me like youre not short of resources, opportunities and community involvement. you may need to look deeper inside to see what you really want. one way of doing this is to dedicate to something (that you may not be a huge fan of initially), and work hard to get better at it. doesnt have to be a martial art...maybe just an art.

my kung fu training, my gf and my puppy are the only things that keep me going sometimes. my career is rough (and rewarding), but my heart isnt in it. im trying to see these moments as crossroads instead of dead ends.

wow this thread is fantastic.

EVEHQ does those things.

I have worked with wood, even got to a point of doing joinery, which is very precise as you use no glue or nails.

South Africa is a dangerous place. I have gambled with my life and although the adrenalin rush did make me feel alive, I stopped when I threw someone off a balcony. Shook me that I could have killed them and the fact I lost control to that extent.

I find that the different styles complement each other. The Thai-Chi is very effective at absorbing and deflecting attacks while setting up for the Thai-kicking boxing offensive, for example.

I hope that your career improves.

Well, you -and how you spend your life- are quite similar to me, so possibly the way i have chosen might be a solution for you as well: ascend to a god-like being.Cool

I got lost in thought... it was unfamiliar territory.

I will probably go and dabble in Anarchy again if there is anyone still around. Can only lose towers there but the PVP is pretty broken. EVE is the first non-FPS game that I felt the PVP "worked".

Seems your unhappy with your loss, and quantify your in-game stuff with to much importance. Else if Iam wrong you clearly dont have enough ISK to care about loses.

and if you do have to much ISK, then you need to let go and learn how to have "fun".

in theory. but when a 250 pound brute is rushing you, our pounding on you, or his buddies are about to stab you from behind, 95% of what you know from the other styles will go out the window due to anxiety. the key to retaining knowledge in your muscle memory is actually through specific breathing patters and massive repetitions. which means not so much variation. in addition, all those styles teach different philosophies to engaging with your opponent, which is ultimately confusing to the simple brain required for physical survival (i.e. not the frontal cortex).

I am fortunate in that regard. When I am in a fight, I suddenly relax and just watch myself do things, which is where the scary lack of control stems from and in most cases, most thugs haven't a clue about fighting. You can usually dislocate an elbow, shoulder or break something and such before any of their buddies can react.

Outside of movies, I've never seen any form of 太极拳 (Thai-Chi) being used defensively in real life. It is mainly used as an exercise routine for the elderly each morning around 6 am in the parks, especially 楊氏太极拳 (Yang style). I mean 太极拳 doesn't even have contact sparring, except for 推手.. even that's for reaction honing for old people mostly :p

My grandfather taught me Thai-Chi when I was little, I am by no means an expert... But I know enough to realize not to depend on it when avoiding a swinging bat... no time to "absorb" and "deflect"...I just move and get the f**** out of the way. If we are just judging on its theory of 后发制人 "delayed reaction move to counter opponent's offensive moves", it has some merit but in that regard I think brazilian jujitsu or sambo has more practicality.

Maybe you can modify Thai-Chi to be more effective?

I haven't faced a bat, just a broken bottle, a gun, a machete and two pocket knives. The guy with the gun was high, so it was easy enough to be out of the way and closing the gap when he pulled the trigger. The machete was useless, I think he was banking on my quivering in fear and letting him mug me. I just kept back away from his wild swings until I saw a chance to get in too close for him to use it. I have scars on my hands from one of the knives and the bottle.

Basically, when someone attacks you, their force is either going in one direction and is easily deflected or they are moving too slowly and are easily avoided.

wow...

[Edit] well I guess you make a good point there about deflecting the incoming force. Thai-Chi does mention it in the theory of 你在扯谎.
If what you did with the guy with the gun was true, you have my respect. That's similar to a reaction timing of 你是一泡屎.

I have been fairly lax with my training the past few years, so I don't think I would pull it off now. I doubt I would pull something like that off with any professionally trained person; they learn to suppress the warning signs, facial expressions, tensing, et cetera. They also keep to a better distance, so there is more space to get through, not to mention, once they have broken the weight of the trigger, I would have no hope as they can squeeze the next shots off more quickly.

My sciences are only high school level and in particular, the Newtonian physics that they teach is far outdated. Outside of that I would just regurgitate what some of the popular scientists have written in their publications. I think it takes a good deal of study and research before one can comment on their level. Smile

I don't know of a way to say this without it sounding like an insult (not my intent) but it sounds like you have accomplished plenty of "things" that have no value in and of themselves, so maybe you could work on being a more well-rounded human being?

Being able to win archery tournaments and learn martial arts is trivial compared to other, meaningful stuff in life - such as the relationshipships you forge.

Again, I don't mean this to sound like an insult, but you somewhat arrogantly say, "Well, I can do all of THIS (pointless, meaningless) stuff, but people? They suck and they bore me."

Go adopt a child and raise them as a single-parent. Take it from someone that's done it, it's way more rewarding than all the "I can's" that you're throwing out here...

pack a bag, leave your cc at home, and go for a 6 month walk.

it'll give you the perspective you want, 'cause that's what you're missing, not a challenge
