Hull serial numbers, please!

As disposable as spaceships may be, there isn't a single pilot that's not attached to one.

Your first, five years old Rifter.

Your Zephyr, that Drake flying which you once got said to "get the f*** out of fleet", your first (or only) ratting Machariel, that Proteus you've been trough countless WHs with.

That Atron you once plowed with trough an Armageddon's plates.

Invaluable memories, now slowly rusting in a Jita 4-4 hangar.

Yet, sadly, that single ship you are attached to, the ship you (as much as you would never want to admit it) love so much, is only a ship.

Nothing distinguishes your Zealot from any other, whether build two days ago or years ago, by an obscure BoB industrialist: mere copies, without an identity of their own.

I'm not ashamed to admit it: I love my Panther, and its loss would go far, far beyond the financial impact, for me.
I have seen most of EVE while flying it, I've met and fought countless other pilots.
I'd like it to be somewhat unique.

This is why I, as a Capsuleer, would want Hull Serial Numbers to be introduced.

Nothing revolutionary: a simple alphanumeric code attached to every single hull.

A short, system generated line, identifying every single man-made ship within the game by its age.

Nothing of particularly reosurce consuming, nothing of gamebreaking.

Imagine the sheer value of a 2003 Rifter, by now: imagine the feeling of flying it into a wall of hostile gunfire.

Friends are like cows: if you eat them, they die.

It's been suggested before. I'd rather see my ship name on the hull, not some random number.

So, you're a bounty hunter. No, that ain't it at all. Then what are you? I'm a bounty hunter.

Server side ships already have "serial" numbers.

I know this for a fact.

I think Id rather see the ships name on the hull than a serial number...

but in retrospect...after seeing half the names on the ship scanner....that might be a bad idea.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I do not think the OP wants the SN visible on the hull, just linked in some way to the ship which we can see, perhaps in the info screen for the ship. Perhaps make every ship in the game a unique entity, much like players or corps, with a history, and unique identifier which can be viewed from the show info screen.

I'm pretty sure OP wants the SN visible on the hull.

If each ship already has a hidden serial number, I'd like to see it made available through API. Then the forums can have a new leaderboard: most kills with the same ship.

If...I remember correctly from what someone told me before. When you repackage a ship the ship loses all uniqueness to it and all /stats/ are set to the default number.

So that means wouldn't the serial number be quite pointless, you couldn't increase value cause you have to repackage to sell it on the market, which from my understanding is in more use then the contract market...

Repacked ships are only singletons with a counter, and is in fact a different object than the ship entirely. Any uniqueness is lost when repacking, so in order to sell something on the market, the S/N would be gone by default. I don't think the contract market will flourish simply because of serial numbers

Nice idea! A way to show when a ship was built and who made it would be great.
I'd like to be able to see a ship and say "Hey that's one I built!".

I think the serial should stay even when repackaged and shouldn't be on the hull but in the show info dialog window.

Read this to see why that is not possible.

Nice idea. But as I understand, we will have support for custom paint-jobs for hulls, so that might be more appropriate for what the op wants.
