Humble Beginnings: My Foray into Eve PVP

Since I renewed my subscription a while ago, I've been thinking "I'm missing out on something in Eve". Since 2008, I've essentially been a carebear, running Missions and flailing about the Eve Universe. I ran into a gate camp on my first run thru Low-Sec while Autopiloting (I learn thru the school of hard knocks) and got immediately blow to high heaven by a group from the Neo Spartans. Delicious rage tears were held back, just barely. I got Kill Rights from the group, but I never bothered acting on it. I've never really enjoyed PVP.

But the fact remains, I've been missing out on something. I've wanted to get into low and null sec on my main account, but I'd want to start fresh. I could have gone for dual character training, but instead I created a second account under trial and figured I'd give it all a whirl. I created a Gallente toon (I fly Min on my main mostly) and started training up my skills to get up to a cheap, T1 Incursus. Here's the Fit if you want to have a looksee. While training, I got some tips on fixing up the fit, and I started to do the Career Missions to earn some starting ISK. Make some money to lose it, gotta love it.

Now, previously on my main, I've been building some cheap fits and, though I try to save them, I tend to lose them all. First wormhole I went in, I got blown up from 100m away by a Sleeper at a data site. Also forgot to bookmark the exit wormhole. Goodbye cheapo implants, hello buying a new clone. So I've gotten over the initial fear of anyone getting into PVP, or even Eve in general: Losing your ship. It can be costly, but it happens. The fact is that you can rebound and get back in the saddle.

So a few days later after I got everything trained, all the items purchased, and after a cuppa noodles, I made my way the 5 jumps or so over to Murethand and start doing the things I've learned while waiting for my skills to train up to the point where I could use everything: Dscan Dscan Dscan. Of course, after a minute or so of fruitless scanning, I start going about it the old fashioned way (Read: The extremely stupid, impatient way). I started randomly warping to areas at 100m. After a few jumps, I found someone ratting in an asteroid belt. Not only were they Ratting, they were flashy red. Nice. Then I look at their ship. T2 Vengeance. Not so nice. I grumble, and warp to the next belt in the series, knowing that I couldn't take him in my little Incy. Warp to 100, see nothing, warp back out. But as I'm warping, I see Flashy T2 warp in. Well, looks like the chase is on. When I get to the next belt, I stick around for a bit. Right on my tail is T2. Looks like the predator has become the prey, but at this point, I just want to get my feet wet. I had no intention of flying off into the sunset with my paintjob all shiny and new, so I locked him, he locked me and activated all his modules. I activated all mine. I saw my shield go down in the blink of an eye. I was armor tanking though, so I expected it. I think I got him down to 1/2 shields when my ship became a momentary star in the sky, leaving my pod hanging out there. Got warp scram'd again, and then the message came thru local: "20m for pod". This to me was laughable, though I could understand if I was running a ton of implants (Which I wasn't. I had the cheapos from Carreer Missions). So I replied with a friendly "Happy Salvaging. GF". He replied back with a "GF" then I woke up in my cloned body.

Afterwards, I was kind of hoping he'd do something that I've seen happen before: where pirates invite someone to a chat. Never happened, but I was still curious to what he thought of the engagement. So I shot him a message:

Thanks for the trial run of that fit. Any tips for someone venturing into the realm of PVP? (Besides 'don't attempt to snag a T2 frigate in a T1')

good fight. you didn;t really do much wrong other than that. You're fit is fine until you can use the equivalent t2 modules.

Though maybe switch the adaptive nano membrane for a 200mm plate.

Your skills will make your frigate a lot more effective soon enough.

To: Kaisii,

Thanks for the tips. Fly safe, or dangerously. Whichever you prefer. o/

dangerously of course! :D and no problem!

Here's the Killmail. http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=19978400

So I'm not really dissuaded by this. It's all part of the great circle of PVP. I know I've got a lot to learn, but hey. We're immortal. We've got all the time in the universe.

Good job, and next time fly a Venture.

With guns on it, of course.

You'll be pleasantly surprised.....:)

It'll still die vs a T2.....but it will die gloriously.

And, you know.....you just might surprise yourself and your opponent....Ventures have a hell of a speed tank, and are damn near unscrammable.

Everything in EVE is a trap.

And if it isn't, it's your job to make it a trap...:)

Not sure if trolling Blink

I think I'll keep the ventures for their mining ability and use ships that have dedicated bonuses towards tanking and weapon controls.

Don't discount the battle venture mate.

Give it blasters, MSE and scram and when the nasty piwates attack, return fire and drop your drones on them. Can be a surprise to a lot of people. and you can pretty much disengage at will.

That is the Way, the Tao.

Balance is everything.

For solo frigate pvp, I suggest you do the following:

Learn to get your pod out. (Once you know you're going to die, select something to warp to, spam warp as you pop.)

Train for T2 mods, starting with the guns, then damage mods, resist mods, and speed mods.

Research the fits used by successful solo pilots and understand why and how they work and on what, as well as what will kill it, and why. Pick an optimized fit, train for it, and try it out. Dual armor rep with capacitor booster is tough to break.

Learn the basic principles of range control, and have a plan for how to get to a range that's best for you and worst for your opponent. Fit AB instead of MWD for a solo Incursus, for this reason.

While training for T2 guns, use faction ammo in your T1 guns.

Learn to choose your fights wisely. Someone chasing you in a T2 hull is not likely to be someone you will beat with your T1 hull. You can bet he has a plan for how he's going to kill you. What's your plan for how to kill him? While it's not impossible to beat some T2 hulls with some T1 hulls, it's a huge advantage, and you have to understand what those exceptions are and how they work. Simply locking him up, running all the mods, and crossing your fingers will be unlikely to end well for you. While you are learning all of this, it's best to stick to engaging only other T1 frigs or T1 cruisers.

Analyze each fight and try to understand exactly why you lost. Was he able to control range? Did he kite you? Inside or outside web range? Was he within your weapon range? Try to figure out how to improve your chances of a win next time you engage that hull type.

Nice read OP and good luck with the pew pew. It's all a great learning experience and can be frustrating, but the rewards are worth it.

That Incursus fit is a perfectly good start to things (although I am amused at the BC fitting having a "Capital Algid Hybrid Administrations Unit II"). Personally, other than core skills being more important than you may realise, for frig pew, I cannot over-empathise the value of training tech II guns and thermodynamics as a priority. Null S really opens up your options in a Gallente blaster frigate and being able to use heat is damn near mandatory. Having that extra tank/dps, bonus scram range or ability to have a short term speed burst really is worth the short amount of time it takes.

Other than that, for cheap pew, destroyers can be surprisingly effective too.... but the Incursus is still one of my favourites so I hope you do well with it ♥

Great post, the Kingpin thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

As for tips, Lady Spank and Roxxo I'doCocaine covered everything but definitely get Thermodynamics. Frigate 1v1's are usually decided on whether you can overheat or not. This significance drops off into the bigger hull classes (but don't get me wrong, it's still significant then).

You could try a dual-rep Incursus. The fit is funny as hell with your armor %'s bouncing back up and down the whole fight.
