So, I'm too old for the rookie channel now and I have this need to place a GSC. I think I have the proper skills and have bought, picked-up, assembled, named, and practiced placing the can up to the "launch for self" point. Now, once I place the container, my questions are:

1. Is it the password that keeps it "anchored"?
2. Could it be picked up by another indy?
3. I've read that they are virtually indestructable and unrewarding if destroyed...is that true?
4. Any other thing you might tell me to get this right would be appreciated.

1. No, it is your anchoring it. It will last 30 days from the last time it was opened.

2. No

3. Yes

4. Don't forget the password

There is always the regular help channel (just "help") for in-game questions where you can stay indefinitely.

Just a note for #3

They are pretty easy to kill (if somewhat boring) - just use some lasers and it's free. They do have a silly amount of structure to get through though. You can't suicide gank them though, unless you want to spend an insane amount of ISK at it.
The "loot" is generally non existent. It depends where you find the tins. If it's in a high sec ore belt, or at a gate, then don't expect anything in it (you'll also need a wardec to shoot it). If, however, it's sitting in a WH or 0.0 next to a moon, somewhere around 40Km from where a PoS might go... there is a good chance that someone was using it as a personal storage and there is also a chance that they left something behind.

But on the whole, GSC and any other anchored container are pointless to kill.

Thanks for the great information.

So, I bought the GSC, assembled it, transported it to the asteroid belt, got far enough from the spawn point, launched it for "self," passworded it, and anchored it near a really uniquely named GSC (because I didn't think about bookmarking it) to serve as a landmark.

When I came back 12 hours later, it had moved off 25 km. When I came back this morning it didn't show on the overview. What did I do wrong?

You must anchor it before setting a password.

Setting a password before anchoring doesn't secure the container.

Right-click the container to bookmark it.

K, I think I did it right this time. One further concern...

Is it normal for my own GSC to Open Cargo and not ask for the password?

PS: I figured out why the first one disappeared. When I tried to Launch for self I was too close to the landmark I had chosen (not realizing I could bookmark the spot I dropped the GSC) and failed to see the warning mssg. So, I jettisoned the GSC to get it out of my hold and then did the final steps. I assume it is wandering around the system now.

if you don't set up password, it will not ask for pasword.

if you set up pasword, it will ask even you for password
