Solo Merlin Brawler: Void or C N Antimatter?

Void has 25% better range, but -25% tracking, and higher dps!

Is there a clear choice?

It's dependent on the situation. Void works well against slower armor tanking frigates like the incursus. Keep at range at around 1500 to about 2k to minimize transversal to get maximum dps out of void (if you're against an obvious kiter you will want to just approach at they will not try to orbit you and will attempt to burn away in a straight line). CN antimatter is better for frigates that will try to orbit you (such as a TDing slasher). Generally I will keep void loaded by default and swap ammo as needed.

void has -25% optimal range and -50% falloff actually.

Only time you ever want to use void is on a stationary target, one of the worst ammunition.

When you're that close to the target to apply damage, even if its webbed and scrammed it can pull transversal on you.

Like Tsukino said unless you're going after very large targets like mining barges or BCs. Carry CN antimatter and null for frigates.

Tech 2 short range ammo has tracking AND range penalties. Only use when fighting ships at least a class above you and/or if your ship has a tracking bonus (example: a Tristan can use Void pretty well but a Merlin can't).

Use faction ammo by default.

Surely thats the only thing that matters in frig pvp. After all i hear its just about overheating everything and pressing orbit 500.

In all seriousness you should probably use anti or null on frigs and then use void on everything up.

if you think you can get low trans through an approch/keep at range or you have a strong web bonus like the DD, you can use void quite nicly on just about anything.

void gets a bit of a bad rap, but if you can fly well or have some extra bonuses you can really deal out some hurt to same size or even smaller targets.

cant count the things ive blapped in a talos at 8k+ with void.

Generally, antimatter. However, if you can do a bit of manual piloting to get in their face, void can be special, it can overwhelm active tanks for example. The Merlin has the tank to just take it in the face for a bit. It won't work well if you hit orbit, if you hit approach you can still end up in a silly orbit as you both end up chasing each other. When you get to this situation, try to either manually pilot untill you are behind them, then hit approach OR manually pilot parallel to them and try to keep within your optimal.


Antimatter is more forgiving.

Void works fine on anything destroyer-sized and up and depending on piloting fine against a lot of shield-tanked frigates.

For merlin cn anit-matter or null.

Now when ships have tracking bonuses you have more of a choice to make.

Void comes into play if you can control your target's range and transversal, because it gives up a lot of falloff and tracking for its greater punch. If you can control the engagement parameters, such as at the warp-in point of a FW plex, and use web and scram to slow the enemy down, then you might be in a good position to shred them with Void even if they're flying frigates. For standard engagements, Null or faction antimatter will probably be your most effective anti-frigate load for a blaster Merlin.

I used to only carry void and null. Then I figured I would carry all three. Now I usually only carry faction and null. I'd say the only time you'd want to consider carrying void is in a frigate where the dps differential between faction and void is substantial. I'm thinking specifically the enyo and catalyst. The difference between cnr and void on an enyo I'd guess is around 60-70 dps?

Also it's worth noting that fed navy ammo is the same as cnr and usually cheaper too because less people know about it :]

However in real terms, CNA will be giving you more dps- unless you can really get close enough to pick the other ships nose. If your that close, tracking will become an issue- that is why CNA should most usually be your choice.
