How should a person looking to be a miner defend himself?

Make friends.

This is an MMO. It scales very well too. Playing with others is rewarded- maybe that small bonus to armor from the designated fleet booster guy is the difference between a suicide gank and laughing as their failed attempt.

Mostly you get knowledge. I've been playing for 3 years and learn something literally everytime I fleet up.

At the very least, get the skills for a T2 tank, and max your resist skills. Nav skills get you moving faster, warping farther without stopping. Core fitting skills will give you more cap for reps or hardeners. Thermodynamics lets you overheat the works and pull out last second saves.
You can train for things like EWAR too. Breaking locks or neuting an attacker till his scram turns off. But if you're doing all that, might as well be firing hot plasma at his face, right?! Cause now you're PvP'ing, sarge!

Be aware. When you cross gates at many large hubs you will be scanned by would be gankers. Flying fully faction fitted or carrying high value cargo around is going to put you on someone's radar. Try to lessen the time you are seen flying in pimped out PvE vessels. Even use shipping services if you are having problems moving- the hit to profits is better than a total loss.

In low-sec areas your best defense is a solid gate-camp. Look for "pirate" groups that actually have a strong industrial backbone.

You can look up The Royal Navy alliance, which claims to be pirate, but actually has something like half the population doing low-sec and npc-null-sec industry and mining. They also found that mining barges make excellent tacklers because of fast lock-on times.

You can also look into sov-null-sec, which can be safer than low-sec an npc-null-sec, in terms of better intel and territory defense. But I personally find it more crowded (with friendlies) and rarer ores will go dry pretty quickly.

If you mine in high-sec you might have to deal with community-funded mining ship deletion. It's really not something you want to get into, and high-sec communities are unprofitable dead ends. You'll find that low-sec and null-sec communities are tighter and a lot more fun.

Feel free to drop me an eve-mail if you want help in looking up low-sec communities.

In Hi-sec, use a couple of hobgoblin drones to defend against rats. Don't waste a turret for a weapon, as your yield will halve instantly.

In Low-sec, although the rats are bigger, they aren't your main concern. It's the players you need to look out for. So keeping an eye out on d-scan, and being ready to warp away at a moment's notice (be aligned to a celestial to warp to) are the priorities. If rats should turn up, you probably want to warp out anyway, as your hobgoblins will have a hard time killing the rats before they do you some serious damage.

1.0 and 0.9 security systems don't have rats, and it's pretty unusual for players to try and kill you in hi-sec anyway, as it's difficult to turn a profit suicide-ganking a venture.

is this advice also pretty much applicable to Exploration ships?

or should I be able to more adequately fit a balance of Exploration/Salvage/hacking equipment along with Drones and weapons?

as I understand it...the only Turret slot i need for Exploration is a Probe Launcher, with the rest of my Exploration equipment in Medium slots? meaning the rest of my turret slots will be free for weapons? or is that not accurate?

I'd also visit the Crime & Punishment forum and have a look at threads about the New Order, maybe google 'miner bumping' in Eve too. Be careful which systems you go to and always keep the local chat channel open. Don't trust anyone, if possible stay to systems where there aren't any other people at all, and don't join any player corps unless you're absolutely certain they're trustworthy.

Eve is a harsh world, vets are fond of this aspect of the game. It's a lot of fun, but you absolutely MUST be able to accomodate the fact that you're at a significNt disadvantage in almost every respect to the vets, and that a noticeable proportion of them are hPpy to exploit you for what little ISK you have and for 'tears', as it's put.

Don't get attached to your ships, and stay in cheap ones until you've built up a bankroll. I wouldn't bother with expensive implants either tbh. Keep your clone upgraded, and if you're ganked, shrug and buy a new ship. Do not engage the ganker in any sort of conversation. It won't improve your mood.

Fit a Cloak in one of your hi-slots. An explorer isn't there to deal damage, so in something like a heron or imicus, I'd use a probe launcher, cloak and salvager in hi-slots, your hacking/data mods in mids, and warp core stabilisers in low. You need to stay out of the way of other players, or be able to GTFO if they do jump you - the warp core stabs give you a chance to avoid the scrams and get away before you explode.

I see, so the basic combat option for an ideally-fitted Exploration ship is "run back to a starbase and get a combat ship"?

would Combat Drones be suitable for at least dealing with NPCs inside Anomalies and Signatures, assuming that the default response to an actual player is to run?

Protection against NPC: Combat Drones
Protection against PC: ECM Drones

Though the chance of an ECM block is small, it's still enough to potentially ruin the plans of your cookie-cutter Catalyst ganker, and if they don't think they've got a 100% chance of success then they'll go look elsewhere.

Well, combat anomalies will need a combat ship. Gas sites, you will be re-shipping into a Venture, and the drones there should be enough to handle the rats, certainly in hi-sec. Data and relic sites no longer have rats at all.......except in wormholes, and that's a whole different ball game.

That's wishful thinking. Resistance just makes you a priority target.

If you're going to be worrying about players, you might as well try the industrial branches of low-sec and npc-null-sec communities. Look up the Sinners of solitude coalition, or the Royal Navy Alliance. The Shadow Cartel also has a strong industrial arm, but I caught some of its members or alts carebearing in high-sec.

Don't mine in high-sec, it's a dead end career that can only end in tears.

No, that is not the case. If you are realy going to get into exploration, and want a change at the realy good stuff, you are going to be working in realy deep nul sec with absolutly no support what so ever and knowing that just about anybody who catches you will kill you. Even fellow explorers will have a go because you are compertition. So you are always looking to avoid any combat situation; hell, even the NPC's in nul sec sites will eat you alive, so don't even think about trying to take them on.

My main exploration ship is as slippery as hell to catch, next to impossible. But (and rightly so) it can be caught and when it is, I know that I am dead. So forget about being an explorer who can fight. You explore and run, then hide, you don't explore and fight.
