That 1200 dps may never be fully applied, but 26 mil a tic in a fully chained up serpentis system with 20 some belts and still killing faster than the rats can respawn is a good feeling.

It's a fun ship and can perform admirable feats for its bargin price, but quoting eft dps and calling it a pve beast just lets the rest of us know you have no idea what you're talking about.

For solo work it's definitely not the best all-round PVE ship. For a DPS alt it rocks.

The PVE Typhoon could be alright.. but only if you have strong drone skills. Likely, if you have trained the usual Minmatar path, your drones and missile skills fall behind projectile skills. The double whammy about the Typhoon, as was sort of addressed already, is that it's DPS is divided among three different damage systems, two of which(projectiles and missiles) are gimped because of they have less highslots for them as compared to their counterparts and one (drones) are gimped because it does not get any bonuses to them.

Unfortunately, the Tier 1 Typhoon requires the most SP to fly well in most situations. Save your isk and train up a little more for at least a Tempest, though in my experience, a Maelstrom will ultimately be your best PVE boat until you can afford a Marauder.

At your SP level: stick with the Maelstrom. As was already explained in the thread, the Typhoon requires good skills in all 3 weapon types (turrets, missiles, drones) to achieve max damage, and requires battleship drone skills at that. It is a VERY poor choice in general for low-SP pilots.

However: the Maelstrom isn't a "press F1 to win" ship either. I ran L4s for a while in one, and here are my tips:

  • Don't assume "one size gun fits all" with respect to missions. Some missions require you to fit ACs and brawl, while others are better suited by artilleries and sniping. Missions where the rats stay at intermediate ranges (30-50km, generally) can be done either way. (BTW: considering your SP, I'd recommend 1200mm artilleries over 1400mm, due to powergrid and tracking concerns.)
  • Corollary to above: Learn to use and love Eve-Survival. Consider it your "scouting report" for the mission. In particular, pay attention to the ranges at which the various spawns are at from warp in points (besides the obvious things such as triggers), and if the mission allows one to warp in at range, as sometimes its best to warp in at range and snipe (Blockades can be this way, for instance). Also: the database of NPCs at Chruker's site is helpful for discerning orbit ranges and nuances of what they are throwing at you (such as the fact that some Angel ships do a a bit of EM damage).
  • Likewise, FIT SPECIFIC HARDENERS. This will help your tank tremendously.
  • Don't pimp the shield booster too far; A C5-L (meta4) or a Domination (low grade faction) X-L SB is adequate for 99 percent of L4 running; anything much better is overkill. The Mael in and of itself isn't exactly a gank magnet, but putting a top-end shield booster on it will draw suicide gankers to you like flies to carrion.
  • Rigs are important. While CCCs are the common recommendation for PvE work, you will want to evaluate your rig choices much more closely since you are cap injecting. Use your fitting tools to compare Capacitor Control Circuits, Semiconductor Memory Cells, and Core Defense Capacitor Safeguards and figure out what works best for you.
  • Rigs are also important in that T2 projectile rigs are a surprisingly affordable investment. I have a T2 Burst Aerator on my mission Maelstrom and have never once regretted it.
  • Find a good use for that last medium slot. A Target Painter or Tracking Computer can be used there, or you can fit an Afterburner, or a Sensor Booster, or even a Stasis Web. This is one case where one is at some liberty to experiment.
  • Drones matter. You will ABSOLUTELY NEED T2 light drones in order to survive some of the tougher L4 missions (use Warriors vs Angels and Hobs on everything else). T2 medium drones may be useful to deal with cruisers that get severely under your guns, but are secondary. You won't need much if anything else.
  • PAY ATTENTION. Missioning in the Maelstrom requires you to be able to actively manage your shields, capacitor, drones, range, and target selection. Walking away mid-mission will simply get your ship blown up in short order when you cap out. You will also be limited in the amount of ammo you will be loading for a mission as you'll want to make sure you have a good supply of cap charges in your cargo hold.
